Some codes represent errors, most others simply communicate the status of the connection. Below are brief explanations for the most common status and error codes. When determining a course of action, review the entire log; some codes are informational only, others indicate that you have entered the wrong information, and others indicate what the information is that you need to provide before continuing. For troubleshooting CuteFTP connection problems, also refer to Troubleshooting CuteFTP Connection Problems. The table below is provided so that you have some idea whether you can solve the issue on your own (e.g., code 331=you need to provide a password) or you need to call your ISP for assistance (e.g., code 426=you are unable to connect to the remote server). These codes are used by most FTP servers/clients. NOTE: The information below is only offered as a courtesy to assist you in telling your Internet Service Provider what the error is so that they can help solve your issue. For example, if you get a code 426, the transfer was aborted and the connection closed. The solution to this error is to "try logging back in; contact your hosting provider to check if you need to increase your hosting account; try disabling the firewall on your PC to see if that solves the problem. If not, contact your hosting provider or ISP." The list below contains standard FTP codes. Numbers outside this list are proprietary to the Server or Client that you are using. POSSIBLE CAUSES There are a few possible causes for this error: The host address was mistyped, is not valid, or https://kb.globalscape.com/KnowledgebaseArticle10142.aspx has changed. Your firewall or antivirus software is blocking outbound/inbound connections to/from CuteFTP. The FTP Server is temporarily down. RESOLUTION for #2 Verify that your firewall/antivirus software or hardware is not at fault by disabling it completely. If you are able to connect to the FTP Server after you have disabled your firewall, you will need to configure it to allow traffic from CuteFTP (add CuteFTP as an exception) in order to prevent having to disable your firewall each time you use CuteFTP. You must add BOTH cuteftp(pro).exe and ftpte.exe to the list of exceptions in your firewall software. Contact the software’s manufacturer if you need assistance with adding exceptions. RESOLUTION for #3 Contact the Server administrator / Web Hosting provider to check the status on the FTP Server. It could be possibly undergoing maintenance or experiencing problems. STATUS:> Initializing SFTP21 module... STATUS:> Connecting to SFTP server... 192.168.20.135:22 (ip = 192.168.20.135)... ERROR:> No further authentication methods available. ERROR:> The requested operation failed for an unknown reason. ERROR:> Can't connect to 192.168.20.135:22. SFTP21 error cuteftp error = #4. STATUS:> SFTP21 connection closed. CAUSE The SFTP server is configured to use a Message Authentication Code (MAC) that does not match the MAC configuration settings in CuteFTP Pro or is not supported in CuteFTP Pro. CuteFTP Pro may be providing the server with the wrong public key. The remote FTP site may be expecting a password cuteftp error in addition to the public key. The user may not have sufficient account privileges on the remote server. RESOLUTION Configure the SSH2 security settings in CuteFTP Pro so the requested MAC can be used. If the SFTP server is using an unsupported MAC, ask the administrator of the remote FTP server to allow useof a different MAC. CuteFTP Pro supports SHA-1 (128), SHA-1-96, MD-5 and MD-5-96. If you have previously configured CuteFTP Pro to use more than one public key, ensure that the correct public key for this site is selected in the CuteFTP Pro SSH2 security settings area. If the remote FTP site is expecting a password in addition to a public key, ensure that option is enabled in the CuteFTP Pro SSH2 security settings area. Ensure that the user account on the remote FTP server is configured with List and Show in List permissions.
