TECHNOLOGY IN THIS DISCUSSION Join the Community! Creating your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now Hi, I like to make vhd's of my old computers before reformatting them. It's a great https://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsserver/en-US/14e4085c-c28e-4076-a4e5-f43f127d5cd4/disk-read-error-occured-vhd-using-disk2vhd?forum=winserverhyperv way to backup. But for some reason I can't seem to get some of them to boot. The one I'm working with right now, and having issue with is: 1.Part of a hardware mirror (just using one of the disks to make a vhd). 2. Windows 7 3. It was running just fine as a physical machine, but slow. 4. The data drive is in tact, and I'm able to access it https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/208396-vhd-backup-not-booting-a-disk-read-error-occurred just fine, but not the "System Reserved" partition, it keeps asking for format it when I mount the vhd file. I tested a working machine and I'm able to access the system reserved partition if I assign it a drive letter, but not from this vhd. 5. I did have to delete the pagefile, restore folder, and hiberfile, (in order to be able to shrink it) but these should not be required to boot. They should just be remade, right? Since in this case I was replacing the HD's I could just pop them back in and change the system restore settings, and what not, then remake my vhd, if my assumption in 5 is wrong, but I have some other backups that are in a similar situation where I made a vhd then reformatted on the same drive, but I still need to shrink them, which means getting rid of some system files that can't simply be moved. I used disk2vhd and vhd resizer to create the vhd and resize respectively. I agree with Keith. I do this all the time and generally it will work fine if you put the VHD as IDE. Before you P2V, it is recommended to build a machine on hardware that is as generic as possible (read: no additional drivers) 0 Pimiento OP IT8141 Sep 13, 2012 at 11:59 UTC Its configured in IDE.
