Assuming that doesn't work boot from CD or DVD and see if the hard drive is usable at all. TerryNet, Aug 24, 2008 #2 Elvandil Joined: Aug 1, 2003 Messages: 51,988 It is probably at its end. It https://forums.techguy.org/threads/dropped-laptop-disk-read-error.743386/ doesn't take much of a shock or sharp tap to ruin a hard drive. The chances are actually pretty good that it is toast. Or will I try my windows XP and try to use repair. Or is windows on any of these disks, They both say windows XP professional thanks ladynimue ladynimue, Aug 24, 2008 #4 ferrija1 Joined: Apr 11, 2006 Messages: 7,954 Repairing or using any of those disks isn't going to help. You're best chance (for free) would be to connect the drive to another machine, either as a slave drive (internally connected) or through a hard drive enclosure. Beyond those free options, would be SpinRite and then x thousand dollar drive recovery process

My daughter just called from college and she got a disk read error msg when she turned on her laptop (Dell 2 1/2 year old), it runs Vista. She said she "kind of" dropped it, but not badly. Yikes. Ctrl-Alt-Del just brings her back to the error msg. I have her looking for her Dell Diagnostics and boot up cd. Is there any chance we can do a system restore? Or does this usually mean the hard drive is destroyed? Any advice, suggestions. Procedures we should follow? Thanks for your help. I kind of know what I'm doing, to a point. My laptop runs XP, but I have replaced hard drives before. Its just harder over the phone. Reports: · Posted 5 years ago Top whs Posts: 17584 This post has been reported. If she dropped it - even slightly - she probably had a head crash in the disk. Take the disk out and put it in the fridge (not freezer) over night. Then try again. If it works, recover the user data immediately to an external drive because it may not last. Then install a new disk, reinstall Vista and put the user data back. How do you figure to do a system restore if the disk is defunct? Nice idea, but you need the disk for that. In the future, make images: http://www.sevenforums.com/tut.....html?ltr=I Then you can recover - even to a new disk - in 20 minutes. PS: You may consider to install an SSD (Solid State Disk) instead of a spinning disk. An SSD you can drop as much as you like without damage. It has no moving parts. And it is a LOT faster than any spinning disk. http://www.newegg.com/Product/.....-_-Product (look for sales which are frequent at Newegg).
