I got the error message while installing from DVD ISO on my home VMWare ESXi server. It took me a long time to figure the exact issue and a subsequent solution. the solution is very simple. Just remove "$ISADIR" from the grub boot command line option by pressing "e" on the boot menu. I was wondering if anyone of you have any clue on what this $ISADIR is and why there is no permanent solution for this? I could not find anything fruitful on Oracle's site. ISADIR is there to allow automatic selection of a 32 bit or 64 bit kernel. Removing it forces 32 bit mode. There must be something wrong with your VMWare configuration. I tried using utsname.version (/.release) but it does not exist for Solaris 10 or older kernels. Is there any other literal/variable which spans current and old Solaris kernels which can give the kernel version/ release information ?
