It runs Windows XP, its a Lenovo Thinkpad with a SATA drive (also in AHCI): This is what happened. I took out the 160GB SATA from the laptop, and put it in an USB enclosure and created an image in Ghost 11 that is saved to a desktop computer, then. I restored the image to a 80GB SATA drive with a USB enclosure. I pop in that 80GB drive to the laptop and that message of "A Disk Read Error Occured" shows up. There is only one partition. I tried the following already: fixboot fixmbr Chkdsk /r (all clean) By t

What I DID: I cloned a partition (after shrinking it to fit the target drive) containing a https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/28307475/a-disk-read-error-occured-press-CTRL-ALT-DEL-after-cloning-a-partition-on-another-machine.html working Win7 system onto another machine. The target machine has one HDD, containing two partitions, a small recovery partition and a large system partition. After completing the cloning process, I tried to boot into the newly cloned system but only got a blinking cursor. So I booted from a Windows 7 install disc and ran bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot and recreated the BCD. I also ran bootsect /nt60 all. Now I get the error "a disk read error occurred, press CTRL+ALT+DEL" when trying to boot. What WORKS: When booting from a Boot CD and selecting the option "Boot from first HDD second partition" the system will boot normally. This uses apparently a bootloader integrated in a Boot CD, as it is in a different language. What else can I try to fix the Windows 7 bootloader? 0 Question by:alexandrus Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Google LVL 52 Active today Best Solution byMcKnife Experienced the same error symptom more than once and took the time to figure it out. I booted the computer (Windows XP SP3) with the bootable disc and cloned the first disk onto the second disk: first disk: Western Digital WD1600AAJS (160 GB, contains WinXP SP3 and all my data) second disk: Seagate ST3500418AS disk read error (500 GB, empty, sealed from the factory) I used all the default options proposed by Acronis Disk Director (automatically resize the partition in the destination disk to fill the entire disk, "NT signature" was left unchecked). I turned off the computer, disconnected the first disk, and connected the second disk in its place (I used the same SATA port on the mainboard, the SATA0 port). I turned on the computer and I was greeted with this message: A disk read error occurred Press CTRL-ALT-DEL to restart Is this normal behaviour? Please note that I used all the default options, I didn't change any option. I've noticed something interesting. The original disk had an offset of 31.5 KiB (32256 bytes). The second disk, after the clone operation, had an offset of 1024 KiB (1048576 bytes). I suspect the problem is probably related to this: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/931760 Regards. Top Login to post comments Wed, 2010-11-17 15:08 #2 Daniel Pedrosa Offline Beginner Joined: 20
