Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart up vote 3 down vote favorite I'm new to linux world. Just downloaded ubuntu and installed it alongside with windows 7 . In grub when I choose ubuntu, it opens with no problem, but when I try to open windows 7, this message appears: A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. I googled for that problem which directed me to download a boot repair tool, when I choose : advanced options / retore MBR --> apply, then restart computer , It boot to win 7 without loading the grub menu. then I opened the live ubuntu from a USB, launched the "boot repair" again, choose : recommended repair , then restart, It returns to the first problem , grub menu appear, from which I can choose only ubuntu , but win 7 show this msg again : A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. I repeated more and more with the same results ... What should I do? I created a boot info summary using the "boot repair tool" if this can help , it's in this URL. grub2 share|improve this question edited Nov 13 '12 at 18:34 Evandro Silva 4,41432744 asked Nov 13 '12 at 18:24 dar

Can you give us a little more information? Is this a UEFI boot or regular? Windows 7 or xp ? If it's regular then the fix is to use the windows CD and do a fixMBR or fixboot. then you will have to reinstall grub to the MBR. you can do the grub fix by downloading boot-repair from here. I did an automatic install. Linux boots up just fine, but whenever I choose 'Win7' http://forums.devshed.com/windows-help/444515-disk-read-error-occurred-ubuntu-dual-boot-install-post1809421.html in grub, I get a message stating "Disk read error, press ctrl+alt+delete". Before I did the auto-install, I used GParted to create partitions and attempted a manual install which failed for unknown reasons. I believe the 100mb disk read that Win7 reserves for the boot sector was corrupted somehow. Linux boots up, but Win7 doesnt. Reinstall Win7 over the current install to repair the corrupted boot sector?? Share Fouchey 8 July 2013 19:41:14 Did you partition it for Ubuntu or just automatic? You should have done "Advanced install" and created disk read error a partition for Linux and a swap partition. Then just had 2 partition Grub should work perfectly fine then. m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Get the answer sanguinegarden 8 July 2013 22:52:26 Thanks everyone for your answers. I did an advanced install at first, and I created an extended partition with logical partitions consisting of space for linux-swap, root (/), /home and boot. During the advanced installation I received an error on the partition where the linux-swap was being installed. So, I got impatient (probably the problem) and restarted the system while it was trying to recover from the error. I deleted all the partitions until they were 'unallocated space', then I did an automatic install. I thought all was well until I tried to boot up Win7. I think I may have found the solution to the problem though. I just reinstalled Win7 over everything after I backed up my data. Thankfully I was able to pull my data from Win7's NTFS partitions via Ubuntu's file manager. I'll reinstall Ubuntu, but I'm going with 12.04 until 13 is more stable. m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Everything works fine with Ubuntu but when I try to boot into Windows, I recieve: A disk read error has occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart... I am using Grub as my boot loader and I think that may have messed up my Windows partition (I don't know why but it appears that I installed grub on that partition). I have tried repairing the install and running chkdsk with the WinXP cd. Both complete with no errors but I still recieve this error when I attempt to boot. Could it be an issue with my boot.ini or another windows file? Here's a copy of my fdisk -l so you can see how the partitions are setup: Code: Disk /dev/sdb: 80.0 GB, 80000000000 bytes 255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9726 cylinders Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System /dev/sdb1 * 1 4864 39070048+ 7 HPFS/NTFS /dev/sdb2 4865 4988 996030 82 Linux swap / Solaris /dev/sdb3 4989 9726 38057985 83 Linux And here's a copy of my boot.ini: Code: [boot loader] timeout=1 default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS [operating systems] multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect And here's a copy of what grub gives me when I view the boot sequence: Code: root (hd0,0) savedefault makeactive map (hd0) (hd1) map (hd1) (hd0) chainloader +1 I can mount/access/modify the partion from Ubuntu without issue.
