Now Windows is giving me A disk read error occurred I can't use my Windows anymore. I haven't found the fix yet but I will try the suggestion. However I could boot Windows by using the built in boot menu of my Packard Bell (F12) and choosing the Windows partition directly. share|improve this answer answered Oct 21 '12 at 15:16 Mike Bommerson 111 add a comment| up vote 1 down vote accepted I restored MBR using boot-repair. If so, start Ubuntu and navigate to GParted. Start it and use the program to check your Windows partition. Often GParted can fix these errors. Good luck, BTW. You can also use GParted from a live CD/USB. share|improve this answer edited Oct 24 '12 at 18:29 Peter Mortensen 1,0312813 answered Oct 21 '12 at 11:46 Malee

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to http://askubuntu.com/questions/204021/a-disk-read-error-occurred-on-windows-after-installing-ubuntu-12-10 restart up vote 3 down vote favorite I'm new to linux world. Just downloaded ubuntu and installed it alongside with windows 7 . In grub when I choose ubuntu, it opens with no problem, but when I try to open windows 7, this message appears: A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. I googled for that problem which directed me to download a boot repair tool, when I choose : advanced options / retore http://askubuntu.com/questions/216800/a-disk-read-error-occured-press-ctrlaltdel-to-restart MBR --> apply, then restart computer , It boot to win 7 without loading the grub menu. then I opened the live ubuntu from a USB, launched the "boot repair" again, choose : recommended repair , then restart, It returns to the first problem , grub menu appear, from which I can choose only ubuntu , but win 7 show this msg again : A Disk Read Error Occured. Press CTRL+ALT+DEL to restart. I repeated more and more with the same results ... What should I do? I created a boot info summary using the "boot repair tool" if this can help , it's in this URL. grub2 share|improve this question edited Nov 13 '12 at 18:34 Evandro Silva 4,41432744 asked Nov 13 '12 at 18:24 darroosh 1613 follow [this answer][1] you would be lucky! It appears that either grub2, or the way Ubuntu implemented grub2, does not detect Windows partitions properly. I had a co-worker help me with this. First get grub working. Then I added the code below in /etc/grub.d/08_custom. Then update-grub. This puts Windows above Ubuntu so it will boot by default. If you wish to boot Ubuntu by defa

I did an automatic install. Linux boots up just fine, but whenever I choose 'Win7' in grub, I get a message disk read stating "Disk read error, press ctrl+alt+delete". Before I did the auto-install, I used GParted to create partitions and attempted a manual install which failed for unknown reasons. I believe the 100mb that Win7 reserves for the boot sector was corrupted somehow. Linux boots up, but Win7 doesnt. Reinstall Win7 over the current install to repair the corrupted boot sector?? Share Fouchey 8 July 2013 19:41:14 Did you partition it for Ubuntu or just automatic? You should have done "Advanced install" and created a partition for Linux and a swap partition. Then just had 2 partition Grub should work perfectly fine then. m 0 l Can't find your answer ? Ask ! Get the answer sanguinegarden 8 July 2013 22:52:26 Thanks everyone for your answers. I did an advanced install at first, and I created an extended partition with logical partitions consisting of space for linux-swap, root (/), /home and boot. During the advanced installation I received an error on the partition where the linux-swap was being installed. So, I got impatient (probably the problem) and restarted the system while it was trying to recover from the error. I deleted all the partitions until they were 'unallocated space', then I did an automatic install. I thought all was well until I tried to boot up

I am able to boot into Linux and Mac OS fine, but not into Windows anymore. The Windows system is located on /dev/sda1. I cannot recall how exactly have I used testdisk but it once said: Disk /dev/sda - 160 GB / 149 GiB - CHS 19458 255 63 The harddisk (160 GB / 149 GiB) seems too small!
