Join Now Hi, I like to make vhd's of my old computers before reformatting them. It's a great way to backup. But for some reason I can't seem to get some of them to boot. The one I'm working with right

tact, and I'm able to access it just fine, but not the "System Reserved" partition, it keeps asking for format it when I mount the vhd file. I tested a working machine and I'm able to access the system reserved partition http://forum.sysinternals.com/a-disk-read-error-occurred_topic20815.html if I assign it a drive letter, but not from this vhd. 5. I did have to delete the pagefile, restore folder, and hiberfile, (in order to be able to shrink it) but these should not be required to boot. They should just be remade, right? Since in this case I was replacing the HD's I could just pop them back in and change the system restore settings, and what not, then remake my vhd, if my assumption in 5 is wrong, https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/208396-vhd-backup-not-booting-a-disk-read-error-occurred but I have some other backups that are in a similar situation where I made a vhd then reformatted on the same drive, but I still need to shrink them, which means getting rid of some system files that can't simply be moved. I used disk2vhd and vhd resizer to create the vhd and resize respectively. I know disk2vhd works great on xp, but you must have the newest version that lets you modify the bootloader. I know that windows 7 takes advantage of newer boot technology and I'm not certain that the VHD will capture the bootloader in its entirety so this may be where you are having your problem. Try using a P2V technology such as that in VMM 0 Chipotle OP Waldoo Mar 18, 2012 at 8:56 UTC John, yes, I'm saying it wont boot. It mounts fine, and I can read the data partition, but then I can't read the boot sector. Brian, I downloaded the latest disk2vhd, 1.63, before doing this. If not, make sure the VM has the right driver for the controller installed. Have you tried moving the VM storage back to it's original state?
