ever deal with. Sometimes the fix is simple, sometimes it's a complete pain. Having recently dealt with this again, I thought I'd post disk read error windows 7 my thoughts in the hopes that it helps someone else out there. So you receive the dreaded "a disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart". Multiple restarts result in the same error message. If you put your drive a disk read error occurred press ctrl+alt+del to restart windows 7 into another computer, or connecting it as a slave on your own computer, it will typically work fine, and no data is missing. Because this error is not usually associated with data loss, DO NOT RE-PARTITION THE DRIVE. Your data is likely safe and sound. Here's how we'll recover your data. Try each step below, in order, and see if your drive becomes accessible after each step. In my experience, you won't start seeing results until step 5

or so. 1. Run CHKDSK /R /P from the recovery console (it will typically find no error) 2. run FIXBOOT from recovery console (typically has no result) 3. run FIXMBR from recovery console (typically has no result) 4. Run the manufacturer's diagnostic utility, downloaded from their website (it will typically find no error) 5. Changing the drives from cable select to Master/Slave may fix it. 6. Replacing the data cable may fix it, but usually not. 7. Setting the BIOS to use defaults may fix it, but usually not. 8. Changing the BIOS drive settings from auto to user-specified, ensuring that LBA is selected may fix it. 9. Pulling the CMOS battery to let the BIOS lose it settings may work. At this point, you may be feeling some frustration. :-) If all that fails, here's what will usually work: Ghost your data to a new drive, and use the original one as a slave. It will work. And all of your data will still be accessible. Your computer should boot normally. If it doesn't, or it there are errors, run the Repair Installation option from your Windows boot CD. But why does this happen? Nobody seems to know why. The problem typically evades all forms of detection. Here's what I've learned: this error message likely has more to do with a hardware interaction between the drive and your system

The latest BIOS version from ASRock is v1.80 which contains disk read error Intel Matrix Storage Manager ROM v8.0.x.I also own 2 x 4TB WD HDDs and I want to set them up in a RAID1 array. The boot drive is a 1TB Seagate HDD. The OS is Win 7 x64 and was installed with "RAID" option for the SATA controller in BIOS and the BIOS version was the latest from ASRock: v1.80.According to Fernando's tutorials I modified the latest BIOS to replace the Intel Matrix Storage Manager ROM with Intel_RST_RAID-ROM_v11.2.0.1527, so that my HDDs would be supported.I flashed the new BIOS and everything worked fine. I could enter the Intel RST Utility (CTRL+I) and indeed the v11.2.0.1527 is flashed correctly and the size of my 2 x 4TB WD HDDs is seen correctly. The problem is that when I set the "RAID" option for the SATA controller in the modded BIOS, the OS does not boot: "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart." The HDDs are in the right order. I'm not a noob. :)If I set the "AHCI" option for the SATA controller in

Thread Status: Not open for further replies. Advertisement food7 Thread Starter Joined: Nov 1, 2005 Messages: 60 Wow, So I did some work on this machine not too long ago. It had basically lost one hard drive in a raid 0 setup during a power surge, and this poor fellow lost all his data. I tried to talk him into upgrading to a third drive for future situations like this, but now not even two weeks later, when he boots, we get to a screen that says a disk read error occurred press ctrl alt del to restart A browse through these wonderful forums is telling me that his hard drive, or at least the partition on 1 of the drives is toast, which would be disastrous at this point. So I am truly hoping for another solution. Yes the machine is running Raid 0. When I boot the machine I get to the intel boot agent screen with the option to enter the setup menu (this is not the bios, just a boot agent something or other where you can tell the machine to boot according to the bios ect) Following that, the screen goes blank, the super micro graphic screen comes up just briefly and then bam, this good old message appears, so there does not even appear to be a way to get into the bios. I am desreate for advice... If I must resinstall windows, then so be it, but we are talking thousands of dollars worth of data, that would be lost. Please please help! food7, Nov 11, 2005 #1 musiclover Joined: Aug 3, 2003 Messages: 541 Try hitting del continuously when booting to see if you can get into the bios, then see what drives in the raid array are recognized. musiclover, Nov 11, 2005 #2 food7 Thread Starter Joined: Nov 1, 2005 Messages: 60 Already got there, thanks though. Both drives are recognized in the bios. I am taking them out to plug into a new computer, to see if they are accessable form inside an os on another hard drive. I am trying to determine whether or not one of the drives is bad. Let you know when I know. food7, Nov 11, 2005 #3 crjdriver Moderator Joined: Jan 2, 2001 Messages: 34,566 food7 said: Already got there, thanks though. Both drives are recognized in the bios.
