The string I have successfully renders when put as the src of an HTML IMG element with the data URI preface (data: img/png;base64, ) but when using the atob function or a goog closure function it fails. However decoding succeeds when put in http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14695988/dom-exception-5-invalid-character-error-on-valid-base64-image-string-in-javascri here: http://www.base64decode.org/ Any ideas? EDIT: I successfully got it to decode with another library other than the built-in JS function. But, it still won't open locally - on a Mac says it's damaged or in an unknown format and can't get opened. The code is just something like: imgEl.src = 'data:img/png;base64,' + contentStr; //this displays successfully decodedStr = window.atob(contentStr); //this throws the invalid char exception but i just //used a different script to get it decode successfully but still won't display locally the base64 string itself is too long to display here (limit is 30,000 characters) javascript image base64 decode share|improve this question edited Feb 4 '13 at 22:01 asked Feb 4 '13 at 21:29 user1387717 3261216 Show your code? –Mathletics Feb 4 '13 at 21:44 add a comment| 2 Answers 2 active oldest votes up vote 27 down vote accepted I was just banging my head against the wall on this one for awhile. There are a couple of possible causes to the problem. 1) Utf-8 problems. There's a good write up + a solution for that here. http://monsur.hossa.in/2012/07/20/utf-8-in-javascript.html In my case, I also had to make sure all the whitespace was out of the string before passing it to atob. e.g. function decodeFromBase64(input) { input = input.replace

The encode one works perfectly, but the decode doesn't. The console said: INVALID_CHARACTER_ERROR: DOM Exception 5 I have tried this but it doesn't help me. How can I make it works properly? Thanks, JSbin javascript base64 decode share|improve this question asked Mar 23 '15 at 7:04 Anakin 12310 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 2 down vote accepted Whenever you decode from base64 to string, the normal procedure is dom exception 5 that it will take 4 characters from the base64 string and convert it to 3 bytes. If you pass 5 characters to the atob() function, it will throw an exception, as the number of characters passed should be a multiple of 4. Here is a link to my solution. For more information on Base64 decoding, you can refer this article. share|improve this answer answered Mar 23 '15 at 7:54 Haris 497410 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft discarded Sign up or log in Sign up using Google Sign up using Facebook Sign up using Email and Password Post as a guest Name Email Post as a guest Name Email discard By posting your answer, you agree to the privacy policy and terms of service. There is no back-end. Must achieve this only with Javascript. I am doing export process with this line of js; window.open('data:application/vnd.ms-excel,' + encodeURIComponent($('#excelContainer').html())); And HTML page has this meta tag; But my table contains some Turkish special chars and Excel doesn't show them correctly.
