Hopefully you have a backup before attempting this. If you do, all may be lost anyway, but at least you can recover if something goes wrong. If you don't.......maybe you should look into making one in the future. But maybe nothing will go wrong. I'm not familiar with that error, but this might do it. 1. Make note of how many partitions there are. If you don't have a record and can't remember, you can use fdisk or something to find out in the next step if it's available to you. If it isn't, you might be able to force a mount of the main partition and read it from the /etc directory. 2. Get in using a rescue mode (CD or some other method) and type (substitute the "X" with the actual partition number): fsck -y /dev/hdaX This will answer all of the queries it makes with a y(es) for you. Otherwise answering each one could go on for a long time and wear you out. 3. Do this for each partition you have there. With any luck, it will fix everything, not mess anything up and you can boot into it without any problem. If something goes wrong, this is a good time to have a backup available. -- Hey, it's not like the whole building burned down. Jun 2010 21:21:04 -0400 Message-id: <4C070380.700@rcn.com> Lenny install on newly acquired used Dell hangs and throws errors to syslog. Do I have two bad disks or a more serious hardware problem? Short of buying a new disk, how would I know? What would you recommend? Or do I have a simple BIOS setting problem? (My last post to debian-user was in 2008. Etch has continued to be rock solid on two desktops. Now I felt was time to upgrade.) First, an old DELL GX240 was obtained and Lenny/xfce installed; P4, 1Gb, 120 Gb WDC disk.
