When trying to save it (either with or without previous editing using the typewriter tool or inserting pictures), I get the error message: "The doent could not be saved. However if I try to view it with acrobat reader 7 then I get the following message: "There was an error processing a page. There was a problem reading this document (135)" The problem is, that the print-shops refuse to print a 'damaged pdf' because they only know acrobat and that prints the error. They are right not to accept a damaged file, in my opinion. They would be responsible if the output was not correct. My printer does it correct... In your workflow, ps2pdf is the PDF creator, so you should start by making sure this is up to date. since ps2pdf only calls ghostscript and this is what ships with Suse 10.1 I would thinkt that this is acceptible new.
