I've also run the sql installer

repair, but it wasn't able to start the service either. When you attempt to start the service, you get this error popup: "Windows could not start the SQL Server (MSSQLSERVER) service on Local Computer. Error 14001: The application has failed to start because its side-by-side configuration is incorrect. Please see the application event log or use the command-line sxstrace.exe tol for more detail." The error log shows: "Activation context generation failed for "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\Binn\sqlservr.exe".Error in manifest or policy file "C:\Windows\WinSxS\manifests\amd64_policy.8.0.microsoft.vc80.atl_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_8.0.50727.4053_none_06328ff5fd1670fc.manifest" on line 0. Invalid Xml syntax." The file in question hasn't been altered since 10/26/2011, but when you open it in a text editor, its just garbage in there: "ÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿÿ
