you see little to no detail in the event log. This error is telling you that the local system (or current account) does not have access to launch DCOM. Particularly if you are using Group Policy to deploy the MSI, this appears because it is the local system account that initiates action before any user is logged on. In doing so, Windows Installer launches the InstallScript acrobat error 1603 DCOM engine as user "interactive user" and generates this failure. To resolve this problem you may use C:\WINDOWS\system32\DCOMCNFG.EXE to change the launch identity of "InstallShield InstallDriver" and "InstallShield InstallDriver String Table" to "Launching user". What you'll have to do is createverbose log file. The 1603 error will appear somewhere in the middle of the log file. A few lines above that will be a "real" error code that will help you figure out the problem. You'll probably encounter some syntax that talks about 'may not be the real error', and you'll have to keep searching up the log file as you can encounter more than one of these entries. It'll take some time to figure out what's going on, but you'll get it. Most of the time, it's something simple;you'll be missing a CAB file or some other requirement. It could be an error coming from a Custom Action. It might also indicate a reboot is pending and won't install - even though there's a seperate errorcode for that. 2011 00:22 by Adam Ruth, Updated June 06, 2016 15:49 Description A fatal error occurred in Microsoft Installer. Possible Causes A file that was needed for a successful installation was not found or was inaccessible. Error 1603 is a catch-all https://support.adminarsenal.com/hc/en-us/articles/220531027-MSI-Fatal-Error-Error-1603 error used by Microsoft Installer when an unexpected failure is encountered during an installation. http://joejoeinc.blogspot.com/2011/03/sccm-msi-error-1603-error-when.html Quite often this occurs when a file that is needed for an installation is not found (perhaps it was deleted by an antivirus solution or it can't be accessed on a network share) Target computer may need to reboot after applying Windows updates. In these cases Windows may not allow additional MSI installations until the target has rebooted. error 1603 Recommended Fixes Verify that any Antivirus software isn't deleting the installation files as they are being copied to the %WINDIR%\PDQDeployRunner directory. (This is the working directory that PDQ Deploy uses to stage and then execute the installation). If multiple files are needed for Installation (i.e. there are other files needed beyond the main installation exe or msi file) verify that your PDQ Deploy Package has the additional files either specified (using the Add msi error 1603 Files drop down) or the option Include Entire Directory is checked. A tell-tale sign that this is your issue would be if the deployment is failing on all of your target computers. If the deployment is only failing on a few targets then the 1603 is being caused by another issue. (see image below) Try uninstalling a previous version of the application. It is possible that there is a corrupt installation on the target which is causing the 1603 error. Try running installation manually on the target computer. Doing this will often help isolate the cause of the 1603 error. If this error occurs while deploying Adobe Flash then chances are that there is a "partial" Flash installation. This is usually one or more registry keys that didn't get deleted when Flash attempted to upgrade. Deploy the "Uninstall Adobe Flash Player - ALTERNATE" package from the Package Library. This will delete any left-over Flash registry keys. If this error occurs while deploy Java then chances are that there is a "partial" Java installation. Deploy the "Uninstall Java (JRE) 7 Update ..." package from the Package Library. From user,Shawn Sheikhzadeh, "This error may come up if there are pending .NET or XML Windows Updates to be installed. It's come up constantly in my environment when t
worked fine under admin but kept failing on a users machine. In the MSI log it would error out with ISMsiServerStartup Failure, Failed to Initialize script support, Error = 0x80070006 Exit code 1603 The application was deployed using and MSI and it was trying to start up the installscript engine but failed. It seems this application was meant to use a setup.exe to invoke the MSI. the root cause of this turns out to be the InstallScript DCOM Permissions for any version of IISscript installed. We need to change the Installsheild permissions from executing as the 'interactive user' to executing as the 'Launching User'. this way when he MSI executes and calls the installscript service to start it will start up as the user who kicked off the installer, not as the logged on user (standard user) who doesn't have rights to install software. Make sure that u have i386 dump in the system or copy it from installation media. Check the CBS logs for the error fixed during this process, Make sure u uninstall the sccm using the command CCMSETUP.EXE /UNINSTALLSolution 2 :Goto command prompt type : REGSVR32 ATL.DLL in windows xp machines and copy the NEWDEV.DLL file in syswow64 in windows 7 64bit and system32 in windows 7 32 bit machinesReplyDeleteJoeJoeinc7/20/2011 11:27 amError 1603 is "Fatal error during installation" which is really just a term for "Something somewhere went wrong, we don't exactly know what went wrong". I've seen other error 1603's when packaging applications since posting this. Often it comes down to different issue and solution each time after extensive testing and log diving. I really should of made mention of the specific application I was having issues with as I can't remember it now. Thank you for your comment and input. It's always helpful to revise my old po
