Read on to learn how to sidestep this speed bump. The following is a non-exhaustive list of known causes for this error: Short file name creation is disabled on the target machine. An Install Script custom action is prototyped incorrectly. A http://www.symantec.com/connect/articles/understanding-error-1603-fatal-error-during-installation file is locked and cannot be overwritten. The Microsoft Windows Installer Service is not installed correctly. The Windows Temp folders are full. The setup was corrupted after installation and, therefore, fails with this error during un-installation. An older version of Install Shield Developer is being used. A general error occurred during the installation. Print and File sharing is not installed or enabled when installing MSDE 2000. How to Avoid this Error The following solutions have resolved this error in the majority of cases: Make sure short file name creation is enabled on the target machine. You can check to ensure that the target machine does not have short file name creation disabled by navigating to the following registry entry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\FileSystem Make sure the value "NtfsDisable8dot3NameCreation" is equal to 0. This indicates that short file name creation is enabled. A value of 1 indicates that this functionality is disabled. You should change the value to 0. After modifying this value, the target machine should be rebooted before attempting to launch the setup again. Not

Or more accurately, an Error: -1603 fatal error during installation. That’s really enough to put a serious downer on the whole day, and definitely enough to keep you from installing the program. error 1603 Error code 1603 is a generic error that really just means ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE, according to winerror.h. There are actually a few common causes, with some fairly straightforward fixes, that can get you past this error with minimal effort. Let’s take a look at some of the most common causes, and easy fixes, for 1603 errors. Cause You are trying to install a program into an encrypted folder. Fix If you use the Encrypted File System (EFS) error 1603 ipod or other third-party encryption software that has encrypted the destination folder or a folder above it (but not the entire volume) either decrypt the folder, or select a different folder that is not encrypted. Cause You are trying to install a program to a folder on a drive letter that is actually a substitute drive. Fix Select the actual physical path for the install, rather than the path through the substitute drive letter. Cause The SYSTEM account needs Full Control permission to the destination folder, and does not have that. Fix Remove the ACL that is blocking inheritance for SYSTEM, or grant SYSTEM the Full Control permission explicitly to the destination folder. Cause A file to be replaced is in use by another program. Fix Close all open programs, and ensure that they are truly closed by checking Task Manager. You may instead choose to reboot or even perform a clean boot if necessary to prevent any background programs from running and locking a needed file. Cause A previous install or uninstall has not completed, or failed. Fix Complete the install or uninstall. You may need to reboot to do so. If you still cannot uninstall or complete the install of the other program, consult their support site for steps to manually remove the program, including folders and files to remove and regist
an error appears: Error 1603. Java Update did not complete. CAUSE This error, seen during the installation process, indicates that an installation did not complete. The root cause of this error is under investigation. WORKAROUND This is a known issue, and we are still investigating the root cause. Meanwhile you can try the following to install Java. Option 1: Restart your system and uninstall old versions Restart your system before installing Once you see the 1603 error, restart your system. Download and install the offline installer package. When prompted, choose Save in the download dialog box, and save the download package in a convenient place (e.g. save on the desktop). Double click on the downloaded installation file to start the installation process. Uninstall Java versions before installing If the above instructions fail to resolve the issue, it is recommended that you uninstall all existing Java versions from the system. Reboot the system after you uninstall all Java versions, before trying to install. Option 2: Disable Java content through the Java Control Panel This option disables Java content in the browser prior to installing. Once you see the 1603 error, close the installer. Find and launch the Java Control Panel Uncheck (de-select) Enable Java content in the browser option In the Java Control Panel, click the Security tab. Uncheck the option Enable Java content in the browser. Click Apply and then OK to confirm the changes. Reinstall Java and re-enable Java content in the browser Download and install the offline installer package. After the installation has completed, re-enable the option to Enable Java content in the browser, if you require running Java content in the browser.
