Other Security Methods It is possible to change permissions on files so that they are no longer readable. You can also password protect directories from the 1&1 Control Panel to restrict access to specific folders in your webspace. This method will alter the .htaccess file to restrict access, requiring the correct username and password in order to gain access. You could edit the .htaccess file yourself to accomplish the same result however. Please note: Setting up or removing a protected directory via the 1&1 Control Panel will overwrite your existing .htaccess file so be careful when doing this! Examples Please note that Error 500 pages mean that there is a problem with the .htaccess file. This can be anything from a simple spelling mistake to a syntax error. If you receive a 500 error after making a change to the .htaccess file, please double check your changes. uploaded some pages to my site for the first time. Is this because I uploaded to the wrong directory? I made a directory to upload the pages to the same as the "Complete web server path:" it said in 1and1 https://help.1and1.com/hosting-c37630/scripts-and-programming-languages-c85099/htaccess-c37776/denyallow-access-to-your-website-files-a773577.html , that didn't work, so I made a directory the same as the "destination" and that didn't work. These 403 and 404 errors are HTTP errors, not DNS errors. When it comes to these HTTP errors, DNS is already over and gone. Therefore it is likely that your problems are not DNS related. Does OpenDNS return the same IP address and other information for 1and1.com and error 403 forbidden www.1and1.com as your other DNS service?
