I can view the file using the web browser on the same machine. I try again with my browser's user agent, obtained error 403 forbidden mac by http://www.whatsmyuseragent.com. I do this: wget -U 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0' http://... and curl -A 'Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64; rv:30.0) Gecko/20100101 Firefox/30.0' http://... but it is still forbidden. What other reasons might there be for the 403, and what ways can I alter the wget and curl commands to overcome them? (this is not about being able to get the file - I know I can just save it from my browser; it's about understanding why the command-line tools work differently) update Thanks to all the excellent answers given to this question. The specific problem I had encountered was that the server was checking the referrer. By adding this to the command-line I could get the file using curl and wget. The server that checked the referrer bounced through a 302 to another location that performed no checks at all, so a curl or wget of that site worked cleanly. If anyone is interested, this came about because I was reading this page to learn about embedded CSS and was trying to look at the site's css for an example. The actual URL I was getting trouble with was this and the curl I ended up with is curl -L -H 'Referer: http://css-tricks.com/forums/topic/font-face-in-base64-is-cross-browser-compatible/' http://cloud.typography.com/610186/691

crawlers and bots which is a waste of traffic and bandwidth. So the websites selectively allow bots (like GoogleBot), but deny access to other bots which don't supply a User Agent. The http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/139698/why-would-curl-and-wget-result-in-a-403-forbidden solution to this problem is so supply a user agent string to the wget request: wget -U "Mozilla" http://www.yoururl.com/path/to/file.pdf The above code supplies the user agent Mozilla to the request for the file.pdf file. If this does not work, you might have to supply a more detailed user agent: wget -U "Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; de; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100401 Firefox/3.6.3" http://www.yoururl.com/path/to/file.pdf This http://www.ewhathow.com/2013/09/how-to-solve-wget-gives-403-forbidden/ should, in most cases, solve the 403 forbidden error problem! I assume you are constructing the URLs for each trading day by concatenating the url strings? Curious to know. –Vishal Belsare Aug 22 '12 at 21:17 Well, I believe, NSEIndia has data going back till 2000 or so... bSEIndia has similar service, and they go back in time even further... –Raghav Mar 27 '13 at 16:40 add a comment| 5 Answers 5 active oldest votes up vote 10 down vote accepted The site blocks wget because wget uses an uncommon user-agent by default. To use a different user-agent in wget, try: wget -U Mozilla/5.0 http://www.nseindia.com/content/historical/EQUITIES/2012/JUN/cm15JUN2012bhav.csv.zip share|improve this answer answered Jun 15 '12 at 22:17 enderskill 2,9631220 That is not completely true. It has an user-agent: Wget/VERSION according to wget --help. –Zagorax J
