There are three common causes for this error. Here they are listed from most likely to least likely. Empty html directory Empty httpdocs directory Make sure that your website content has been uploaded to the correct directory on your server. Remember to replace example.com with your own domain name. Grid: /domains/example.com/html/ This is the path you will use for FTP. However, the full path to your website content is /home/00000/domains/example.com/html/. The server error 403 forbidden access is denied mac 00000 is your site number. See this article for details. DV server: /var/www/vhosts/dv-example.com/httpdocs/ When you connect with your FTP user, you just need to navigate into the httpdocs directory. If this folder does not exist, feel free to create it. No index page The home page for your website must be called index.php or index.html. To resolve this error, upload an index page to your htmlhttpdocs directory. If you already have a home page called something else - home.html for example - you have a couple of options: Rename your home page to index.html or index.php. Set up a redirect on the index page to your real home page. See How do I redirect my site using a .htaccess file? for details. Set a different default home page in your .htaccess.htaccess file. Javascript Kit has a good example. If you don't want a single page to display, but instead want to show a list of files in that directory, see Making directories browsable, solving 403 errorsMaking directories browsable, solving 403 errors. Permissions and ownership errors A 403 Forbidden error can also be caused by incorrect ownership or permissions on your web content files and folders. Permissions Rule of thumb for correct permissions: Folders: 755 Static Content: 644 Dynamic Content: 700 Please

Edited 6 years ago # Scott McGuire Administrator Hi, Which program are you using to create your website? Thanks, Scott McGuire Fetch Softworks Edited 6 years ago # Danosaur Member Adobe error 403 CS3 (Dreamweaver) Posted 6 years ago # Scott McGuire Administrator Hi, Thanks for the information. There are two likely causes for this sort of problem. First, on many servers, the files that make up your website must go in a specially named folder, for example, one named "public_html", "htdocs", or "www" — the exact name of the folder will depend on your server. Usually you do not need to create this folder, it will server error 403 already exist. You should check to make sure you uploaded your website files to the correct folder on the server. If you are unsure which folder you should put your website files in, you should contact the company or person that runs the server and ask which folder you should upload website files to. Second, it is possible you uploaded your website files inside a folder, when what you really needed to do was upload the contents of the folder, but not the folder itself. For example, let's say your website is in a folder called "My New Website", and inside that folder you have the pages and files that make up your website: So, on your Mac's hard drive, you might have: My New Website (folder) contact.html index.html Photos (folder) For your website to work correctly, you must be sure to upload the entire contents of the "My New Website" folder, but don't upload the "My New Website" folder itself. You should check for those two potential problems, and if you have made a mistake, try uploading again. If you still can't get it working, let us know and we can see if we can advise further. Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server I requested to have FTPES (secure FTP) access on my godaddy account. Little did I know that they would have to transfer me servers. After the transition, my links broke from my subdomain that I used to host my pdf files. I got a Forbidden - You don't have permission to access / on this server when I tried to click on the links. Here's the problem: When Godaddy transferred my files to the new server, they did not update all the DNS entries and gave standard file permissions. Fix: Check the DNS entries to make sure they have the new updated IP Address associated with your hosting account. (If that just sounded like "Blah, Blah, Blah", ask your geek friend for help - as that would take quite a few steps to lead you through and Godaddy continually updates their interface). If the DNS entries are correct, check the file permissions. Make them 775 or 774, depending on your risk level (775 is more likely to work, 774 is more safe, 704 is even more safe). Highlight and right click on the server files in Filezilla, if you use it.
