Possible results of what you did: All actions in 1 done by the root user resulting all files owned by root so the httpd daemon cannot access them. You now have the ownership of /opt/lampp/htdocs/ and this has the same results as number 1 above. You did not mentioned how the permissions are set now thus it is unclear what is accessible right now. Possible solution: In my server, I host all public documents at /srv/www/ but the solution will be the same. Give the ownership to the httpd daemon (Apache, Nginx, etc), that is: sudo chown -R www-data:www-data /opt/lampp/htdocs/ Assuming that the httpd daemon is named www-d

I can start the server: $ sudo /opt/lampp/lampp start Starting XAMPP for Linux 5.6.21-0... XAMPP: Starting Apache...ok. XAMPP: Starting MySQL...ok. If I enter http://localhost/xampp in the browser I get an 403 forbidden error. I have got XAMPP up and running, no problem. Set up all the security and created a symbolic link which links the public_html folder in my home folder to /opt/lampp/htdocs But when I try and access a site that is saved in the public_html folder (~/public_html/99/index.php) I get the following error in my browser: Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster. Anyway, I followed the instructions given in the site and extracted it to /opt/lampp and I also uncommented the line in /opt/lampp/etc/httpd.conf so mod_userdir will be enabled. Now, when I try to access my user public_html (via http://localhost/~user), I get this error: Access forbidden! You don't have permission to access the requested object. It is either read-protected or not readable by the server. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster. One way is to run chmod o+x /home/user (allow everyone to switch to the home directory) and chmod -R o+rX /home/user/public_html (make public_html and files there readable by everyone). If you need better access controls, use ACLs. share|improve this answ
