2009 2:40 AM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote I figured it out.I didn't have the Permissions or the Auditing set correctly. All I have installed is Win 7 x64, the regular Windows Updates and some other recommended updates (drivers for my VGA, NIC, HID, TV tuner...I think that's it). All were done via the Windows Update program.I don't think it was any of the many settings that I made via the MMC/Local Computer Policy. Most of the changes were for Internet Explorer. Made some minor settings for Windows Explorer, Windows Installer, Windows Messenger, etc...Any advice would be greatly appreciated. your account only takes a few minutes. Join Now I have a fis for the Event Viewer Error 4201. It is to fix the permissions for the SYSTEM account on the C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/227370-error-4201-the-instance-name-passed-was-not-recognized folder so that the SYSTEM account has Full Control to all Sub-directories, files and folders. Is there a way SW can push these new permissions to the local PC without installing any software on the PC? This may not mean much using a GPO though. Also in reading the TechNet document you referred to, I appears it is targeted for servers rather error 4201 the than PCs. I'm a GPO novice (at best), and I very well maybe missing something. These permissions need to be assigned to a folder on the C: drive of the local Win7 PC, no server involvement. Can I target just Win7-64 PCs using the GPO? 0 Serrano OP Don7478 May 22, 2012 at 12:10 UTC Yes you can target whatever Windows OS you want. In Active Directory I'm assuming you have an OU that contains all of your targeted workstations? I was trying to find a way to do this with Group Policy Preferences because it's much more selective in how you "target" it. 0 Anaheim OP PaulG103 May 22, 2012 at 12:28 UTC Actually we have an OU for each dept in city hall (15) plus pulic services, utilities, police and fire. We are distributing the Win7 PCs based on the age of existing PCs. Therefore the Win7 PCs are all over the place mixed with mainly WinXP and some W2k PCs. I guess at this point nothing is going to be easy. All our PCs are connected to a domain and have unique names (obviously), therfore could I use PC names rather than OUs? 0 Serrano OP Don7478 May 22, 2012 at 12:33 UTC You can use WMI filters to target the operating s
20 Oct, 2014 at 12:51 PM while trying to troubleshoot printing issues on a machine, the event logs weren't available. Trying to start them gave a "service error 4201 the instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider". I found the following articles helpful in resolving the problem - basically granting the SYSTEM account full control to the %systemroot%\system32\LogFiles\WMI\RtBackup folder. A couple of months ago, one of the techs tried changing the permissions on the C: drive to fix a problem - I believe that caused this problem. http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/fix-event-log-error-4201-instance-name-not-recognized/ http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/windowsdesktop/en-US/c75ae899-d05b-411d-a7f2-00fdd33b8589/event-log-error-4201-errorwmiinstancenotfound http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/windows/en-US/95987ca3-a1b2-4da6-95b7-d825d06cdac7/error-code-4201-the-instance-name-passed-was-not-recognized-as-valid-by-a-wmi-data-provider Did you find it helpful?
