Note, the solution involves modifying the registry on XP so it is not for the faint of heart.Note that a key symptom of this problem is that the modem connects and then disconnects just after trying to register the computer on the remote network.Step 1: Uninstall the WAN Miniport (IP) and WAN Miniport (PPTP)IMPORTANT: This procedure contains information about modifying the registry. Before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and mak
connection, it went like this: - Modem would pick up the phone and dial. - Carrier sounds http://superuser.com/questions/525602/all-created-vpns-result-in-error-720 / handshaking would occur. - Username and password were checked and verified. - Then it would disconnect with an error error 720 code of "720" More on the message: Error 720 - the connection attempt failed because your computer and the remote computer could not agree on PPP control protocol. I had tried every fix I could find. Removing the Winsock dial up error and Winsock2 keys, re-installing TCP/IP, and running a series of commands using the "netsh" tool. None of that worked. What seemed to work: "WAN Miniport (IP)" seemed to be messed up some how. It was listed twice in Device Manager. I had to remove the keys for the two entries from the registry, then I could remove the devices from Device Manager. I had to use the "devcon" command to re-install the "WAN Miniport (IP)" device. The command to restore the WAN Miniport (IP) device was: devcon.exe install %windir%\inf\netrasa.inf MS_NdisWanIp You can get DEVCON.EXE (32-bit and 64-bit) from here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/311272/ You can get more info on this from here: http://www.daniweb.com/forums/thread18016.html Home Log in Copyright © 1999-2016 XdN

I'm using windows 8 and standard ptpp VPN. Every VPN I have created though results in the same error: Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established You might need to change the network settings for this connection The VPN works in Windows 7 and XP. I'm not sure if this has something to do with my new laptop or if its something with Windows 8 itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any extra info I can provide please let me know. Edit: I've tried with virus scanner turned off and windows firewall turned off as well and I still receive the same error message. vpn windows-8 share|improve this question edited Jul 3 '13 at 13:08 nixda 15.9k65094 asked Dec 29 '12 at 0:22 campo 191116 migrated from serverfault.com Dec 29 '12 at 11:37 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. And may be more suitable for SuperUser anyhow... doesn't seem like it's a professional admin problem, at least as described. –HopelessN00b Dec 29 '12 at 0:40 thanks HopelssN00b, I'm not sure what info to provide that will be most helpful, if you let me know what info you need I can try and provide it.
