The organization officers, and I, are authorized to connect remotely to the office computer using a PPTP vpn error 733 VPN. Until last month I had this all working: the office computer was WinXP Pro, I had another XP computer and a Vista laptop, others had other computers including some Win7 release candidates.

And everybody could connect. Trouble was, they were all connecting to the same userid, using a shared password; very bad juju. All these systems have now been upgraded to Windows 7, and I can't get the PPTP VPN to work. I want to set it up so everybody who needs to use the VPN has a user account with a password on the office computer, and all those vpn error 800 user accounts are authorized to use the incoming connection, which I set up according to the instructions shown in various forums I've found. I want everybody to dial into the VPN using their own userids and passwords. The VPN setup is pretty much the same as in XP! I've done this before and got it working. But, using my own account on the office computer as a sample, I keep getting "error 720" when I try to connec, "unable to connect." Can anybody suggest what I may be doing wrong? Also, the default on the outbound VPN connection on my Win7 desktop is to connect using SSTP - I can't use that without reconfiguring my router which is only set up to accept PPTP and L2TP. Where can I find out what ports SSTP uses? I've chosen the PPTP option but it still doesn't connect. (Just to annoy me more, the office computer is on Win7 Release Candidate - don't ask - so I'll have to set it all up again when the upgrade disk comes, probably tomorrow...) Turns out you might need to assign an IP address range to the VPN server, by doing the following: 1.

I'm using windows 8 and error 720 standard ptpp VPN. Every VPN I have created though results in the same error: Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established You might need to change the network settings for this connection The VPN works in Windows 7 and XP. I'm not sure if this has something to do with my new laptop or if its something with Windows 8 itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any extra info I can provide please let me know. Edit: vpn error 720 I've tried with virus scanner turned off and windows firewall turned off as well and I still receive the same error message. vpn windows-8 share|improve this question edited Jul 3 '13 at 13:08 nixda 15.9k65094 asked Dec 29 '12 at 0:22 campo 191116 migrated from serverfault.com Dec 29 '12 at 11:37 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. I'm happy to move to super user if that will be more appropriate. –campo Dec 29 '12 at 1:13 I don't know either, but look at what you have provided us - basically that a bunch of your PTPP VPNs throw a 720 error when you use Windows 8. Uh, alright, but that doesn't have any information that's going to be much good for troubleshooting. –HopelessN00b Dec 29 '12 at 1:22 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 13 down vote Got this problem after migrating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. It was due to altered miniports which had to be reinstalled. Here is how I managed to do so: Locate broken miniports [yellow icon]: Device Manager -> View -> Show hidd
Windows 7 workstation to a PPTP VPN being served by a Server 2003 machine running RRAS I received VPN Error: 720 "A connection to the remote computer might not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection." This would happen after the "Verifying username and password" phase during the "Registering your computer on the network" phase. My Solution: Rebuild the TCP/IP stack by opening an elevated command prompt and running the following command: netsh int ip reset The Long Story: I'm running Windows 7 RC and have a PPTP VPN connectoid that connects to a Server 2003 RRAS server. I was able to successfully connect just yesterday but today when I attempt to connect it gets as far as "Registering your computer on the network" and then fails with Error: 720 "A connection to the remote computer might not be established. You might need to change the network settings for this connection." *sigh* I always hate it when things that worked one day suddenly and with seemingly no reason stop working. To my knowledge no updates have been applied to the server or to my Windows 7 machine in the time between yesterday and today. First I check to see if my Virtual XP instance can connect to the VPN. I created a new VPN connectoid and was able to connect with no problems using simple default settings. I then looked at my Windows 7 connectoid's options and did a little twiddling like disabling "include Windows logon domain" (not sure how that got enabled in the first place) and moved it from PPTP to Automatic (all it does is delay the logon time while it tries to figure out how to connect from among the available options but I figured it was worth a try). Still no luck. I created a brand new connectoid using the default values for everything and it still gave me Erorr: 720. Fortunately I have a secondary VPN that I use for just such an occasion. It's via a SonicWALL TZ 180 using the lone SonicWALL Global VPN Clien
