I'm http://stackoverflow.com/questions/25245854/windows-8-1-gets-error-720-on-connect-vpn using windows 8 and standard ptpp VPN. Every VPN I have created though results in the same error: Error 720: A connection to the remote computer could not be established You might need to change the network settings for this connection The VPN works in Windows 7 and XP. I'm not sure if this has something to do with my new laptop or if its something with Windows 8 itself. Any help would be greatly appreciated and if there is any extra info I http://superuser.com/questions/525602/all-created-vpns-result-in-error-720 can provide please let me know. Edit: I've tried with virus scanner turned off and windows firewall turned off as well and I still receive the same error message. vpn windows-8 share|improve this question edited Jul 3 '13 at 13:08 nixda 15.9k65094 asked Dec 29 '12 at 0:22 campo 191116 migrated from serverfault.com Dec 29 '12 at 11:37 This question came from our site for system and network administrators. And may be more suitable for SuperUser anyhow... doesn't seem like it's a professional admin problem, at least as described. –HopelessN00b Dec 29 '12 at 0:40 thanks HopelssN00b, I'm not sure what info to provide that will be most helpful, if you let me know what info you need I can try and provide it. I'm happy to move to super user if that will be more appropriate. –campo Dec 29 '12 at 1:13 I don't know either, but look at what you have provided us - basically that a bunch of your PTPP VPNs throw a 720 error when you use Windows 8. Uh, alright, but that doesn't have any information that's going to be much good for troubleshooting. –HopelessN00b Dec 29 '12 at 1:22 add a comment| 8 Answers 8 active oldest votes up vote 13 down vote Got this problem after migrating from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. to write this manual so that you can understand what to do. Guess I found a way to fix that 720 error in Windows 8 (also works in Win 8.1). Hope it will help you. So, the error shows itself when you try to establish some kind of Internet connection — PPPoE, PPTP, L2TP, etc. Sure, you have already searched for the right way to fix the error and definetely tried the commands: netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log And they didn't work, saying the access is denied. So, here are the steps you may follow to reset TCP/IP protocol in windows 8 and fix the 720 error: Download Process Explorer from Windows Sysinternals website: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us//sysinternals/bb896645.aspx Unzip and run it. Uncheck all operations, but the windows registry ones. Add two Filters from the Filter menu in Process Explorer. The First one should include process named netsh.exe, and the second — the result "ACCESS DENIED" (I used capital letters, not sure if it is necessary) Press Windows + X buttons on your keyboard and run Command Line as Administrator. Run the netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log command. It will not be able to complete all the necessary actions to reset the IPv4 protocol, but you will see a line in process explorer, telling you which parameter in windows registry failed to change. Press Windows + R buttons, type regedit to run registry editor. Navigate to the registry key from process monitor, click it with the right mouse button and select "Permissions". Set it to "Full Access", then click Ok. Repeat that netsh int ipv4 reset reset.log command. It will now work well. Repeat steps 5-7 with netsh int ipv6 reset reset.log command. Run netsh winsock reset command in coomand line. Restart your computer That's it, the error 720 shouldn't appear any more.
