Click the network (monitor or wireless signal) icon in the bottom-right of the screen Right-click your new VPN connection and select View connection properties In the dialogue box, click the security tab, under Type of VPN select Point to Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP) Select the radio button Allow these protocols, then tick Challenge Handshake Authentication Protocol (CHAP) and Microsoft CHAP version 2 (MSCHAP v2) and click OK Try again and see if this has fixed the issue. share|improve this answer answered Jun 17 '14 at 14:10 CharlesH 1,6982516 Unfortunately I do not think this would make any difference, the VPN is set up to use Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec). I have a Thinkpad T60 and about six months ago was suddenly unable to use my Vodafone Vodem so I tried my old Vodafone card modem and it wouldn't work either. Even tried my Sony phone with a cable and it wouldn't work. When I've travelled for the last six months I have had to take my old T42 with me and all the modems work fine with that laptop. I have tried many solutions to this and wasted countless hours. Today I finally found a tiny free program called rarepair.exe - do a search and you can easily find it but I got it from here http://forums.practicallynetworked.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=131 Click on it and it removes all your network drivers, reboots your machine, reinstalls the drivers and then does a second reboot. Everything was restored perfectly. I would have paid serious money for this as it has saved me from doing a fresh XP install which would have taken weeks to get everything reinstalled. Please copy this to any sites you have visited while trying to find a solution. Microsoft couldn't fix this problem - or pretended it didn't exist

The connection works fine on any other desktop or laptop which leads me to believe the settings on the server (username, password, etc.) are correct. The laptop will not connect when connected via the wireless LAN to the internet or the wired network card. I have reset ip (since I cannot uninstall in XP pro).I have recreated the id on the server.I have updated all service packs from Microsoft.I have updated the driver to the Intel network cards in the laptop.I have run xp tcp/ip repair utility.I have looked in the event log of both the server and the laptop - nothing appears.I am running tcpip and client for Microsoft networks and have made sure they are checked in the connection properties.
