establish my l2tp VPN with an preshared key, it fails with the error 789 the same connection had worked before (haven't used it for a while) I set up a Virtualbox Windows 7 64bit (my real system is Win 7 64bit too with current vpn error 789 l2tp-connection failed updates and), and there the vpn connection works. I already checked this here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/926179/en but it can't be the reason, as the explained registry settings are missing in the virtual windows system too. my System configuration is as follows: System: Windows 7 64bit network card: Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller driver: 7.72.410.2013 the Virtualbox System is as follows: System: Windows 7 64bit virtual network card: Intel Pro 1000/MT Desktop I've created a log file for this connection it is available here: http://jonnyrimkus.square7.ch/stuff/network.txt.htm thanks in advance Saturday, August 03, 2013 11:51 PM Reply | Quote Answers 0 Sign in to vote Hi, From your post, I know that you got error 789 when trying to create VPN connections. It can also occur when you try to establish a VPN connection by using Layer Two Tunneling Protocol (L2TP) from the Terminal server to connect to a Windows 2000 Server-based computer that is configured as a VPN server. The solution to the problem Follow the steps below to resolve “VPN Error: 789 The L2TP connection attempt failed”: 1 Use a pre-shared key on both ends of the VPN connection. (The L2TP/IPSec feature supports gateway-to-gateway VPN implementations by using a pre-shared key for Internet Key Exchange (IKE) authentication.) Footnotes: Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products and applies to Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.
