According to a website that I read, it should be at /var/log/httpd/error_log But I don't have the httpd directory on /var/log apache-2.2 share|improve this question asked Oct 8 '10 at 22:05 valter 1812721 It is where you described apache error log location ubuntu it. Probably you never started apache and therefore this directory did not get created. Or you have you custom build configuration. Did you maybe install some hosting control panel software? –Raffael Luthiger Oct 8 '10 at 22:13 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 5 down vote accepted Check your httpd.conf The LogFile variable tells you where apache is writing logs. This value is often (always?) relative to the ServerRoot variable. share|improve this answer answered Oct 9 '10 at 0:13 tim 44624 add a comment| up vote 5 down vote Chances are it's in /var/log/httpd. Do you have locate installed? Have you run updatedb recently, or have it cronified? If so, you can do locate error_log. share|improve this answer answered Oct 9 '10 at 0:26 Andy Lester 453212 add a comment| up vote 2 down vote take a look at your /etc/httpd.conf file and check where you are writing your logs valter. as Raffael says it maybe that you've got them being written to odd locations. check that your httpd server actually started too! :-) share|improve this answer answered Oct 8 '10 at 22:20 Khushil 488310 I found the following line on httpd.conf, in other server: ErrorLog logs/error_log –val

Logs are typically under /var/log, but some systems have them elsewhere. –Gilles May 19 '12 at 12:51 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 91 down vote accepted Ultimately, this depends on your Apache configuration. Look for CustomLog directives in your Apache configuration, see the manual for examples. A typical location for all log files is /var/log and subdirectories. Try /var/log/apache/access.log or /var/log/apache2/access.log. If the logs aren't there, try running locate access.log. share|improve this answer answered May 19 '12 at 12:54 Gilles 368k666671117 +1 for CustomLog –Radu 7 hours ago add a comment| Did you find this question interesting? You can change the ownership of the folder to root:apache and also add yourself to the apache group. sudo chown -R root:apache /var/log/httpd then open the /etc/group file and add the following to the group 'apache' sudo vi /etc/group apache:x:48:"your username" sudo chmod -R 755 /var/log/httpd Hope that solves the issue. cheers :) share|improve this answer edited Nov 28 '12 at 12:51 answered Nov 28 '12 at 12:42 rahul 95111 1 I did everything but still access denied –Krystian Nov 28 '12 at 12:48 @Krystian forgot to add one more thing.I have added that edit to the answer that i posted,in case you forgot that. Can u give me the o/p of ls -ld /var/log/httpd ? –rahul Nov 28 '12 at 12:51 It much safer to just use su or sudo to access the relevant files. –terdon Nov 28 '12 at 12:53 i dont know root password so I cant use su and sudo doestn work with cd command because it is shell command not bin –Krystian Nov 28 '12 at 13:04 @rahul yeah chmod did the trick thanks! –Krystian Nov 28 '12 at 13:12 | show 1 more comment You must log in to answer this question.
