The service status seems to say everything is fine but every so often requests for the new suddomain don't resolve (its happens https://forums.cpanel.net/threads/how-to-monitor-dns-requests.137777/ a number of times a day). My secondary dns is a bit out of sync at the moment so I need to be able to find out why my dns isn't responding to every request for the suddomain. I checked the service log and I can only find 1 entry for named service wasn't running but it restarted soon after. Is there a way to log all DNS requests for a domain/subdomain for 24 hrs so I can see whats happening to requests? The subdomain won't respond to pings either but the domain will #1 mobcdi, Nov 12, 2009 Last edited: Nov 12, 2009 mobcdi Well-Known Member Joined: Jul 13, 2009 Messages: 109 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 16 Is there a particular log file I should consult to see if DNS is encountering errors? The service status doesn't seen to saying anything helpful #2 mobcdi, Nov 13, 2009 the_bobara Well-Known Member PartnerNOC Joined: Sep 23, 2004 Messages: 92 Likes Received: 0 Trophy Points: 6 Location: Bulgaria cPanel Access Level: Root Administrator If you want to monitor dns requests you have to activate DNS BIND logging Clause, but I dont suggest to do this, unless it is big problem. DNS logging will load your server! You can use http://freshmeat.net/projects/dnstracer/ to check dns anwers. #3 the_bobara, Nov 13, 2009

2007 last updated June 26, 2007 in CentOS, Linux, TroubleshootingQ. How do I turn on DNS server logging so that I can see all the queries on my CentOS 4.0 server?
A. You can use rndc command which controls the operation of a name server. It supersedes the ndc utility that was provided in old BIND releases. If rndc is invoked with no command line options or arguments, it prints a short summary of the supported commands and the available options and their arguments.rndc communicates with the name server over a TCP connection, sending commands authenticated with digital signatures. In the current versions of rndc and named named the only supported authentication algorithm is HMAC-MD5, which uses a shared secret on each end of the connection. This provides TSIG-style authentication for the command request and the name server\u2019s response. All commands sent over the channel must be signed by a key_id known to the server.Task: Turn on loggingType the following command as root to toggle query logging: # rndc querylogTask: View bind sever query logOnce this is done, you can view all logged queries usimg /var/log/messages file.
