Logs are typically under /var/log, but some systems have them elsewhere. –Gilles May 19 '12 at 12:51 add a comment| 3 Answers 3 active oldest votes up vote 92 down vote accepted Ultimately, this depends on your Apache configuration. Look for CustomLog directives in your Apache configuration, see the manual for examples. A typical location for all log files is /var/log and subdirectories. Try /var/log/apache/access.log or /var/log/apache2/access.log. If the logs aren't there, try running locate access.log. share|improve this answer answered May 19 '12 at 12:54 Gilles 371k696751126 +1 for CustomLog –Radu Sep 30 at 14:05 add a comment| up vote 20 down vote If you can't find the log with Gilles's answer, there are a couple more things you can try. Look in /var/log/httpd. Run sudo locate access.log as well as sudo locate access_log. The logs on my system were not visible except to root, and the file was called access_log instead of access.log. share|improve this answer answered Jan 27 '15 at 19:28 Don Kirkby 30124 3 +1 for /var/log/httpd - led me right to it on our CentOS installation –Chuck Wilbur Oct 2 '15 at 19:27 add a comment| up vote 5 down vote Apache server records all incoming requests and all requests processed to a log file. Do NOT give people write access to the directory the logs are stored in without being aware of the consequences; see the security tips document for details. In addition, log files may contain information supplied directly by the client, without escaping. Therefore, it is possible for malicious clients to insert control-characters in the log files, https://httpd.apache.org/docs/1.3/logs.html so care must be taken in dealing with raw logs. Error Log Related Directives ErrorLog LogLevel The server error log, whose name and location is set by the ErrorLog directive, is the most important log file. This is the place where Apache httpd will send diagnostic information and record any errors that it encounters in processing requests. It is the first place to look when a problem occurs with starting the server or with the operation of the server, since it will often contain details of what went wrong and how to fix it. The error log is usually written to a file (typically error_log on unix systems and error.log on Windows and OS/2). On unix systems it is also possible to have the server send errors to syslog or pipe them to a program. The format of the error log is relatively free-form and descriptive. But there is certain information that is contained in most error log entries. For example, here is a typical message. Written by Louise Fahys Be the first to comment! From error log : http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/apache-logs/ There are two type of apache httpd server log files: Error Logs All apache errors / diagnostic information other errors found while serving requests are logged to this file. Location of error log is set using ErrorLog directive. If there is any problem, you should first take a look at this file using cat, apache error log grep or any other UNIX / Linux text utilities. This apache log file often contain details of what went wrong and how to fix it. RedHat and Friends, Security, Suse, TroubleshootingI‘m running CentOS 5.x server with Apache 2.2 + PHP 5.x server. Can you tell me exact location for php error log file? Generally, on all production web servers displaying error to end users via a web browser is turned off using php.ini file settings. Open /etc/php.ini file and find out line that read as follows:
error_logOR use the grep command as follows:grep error_log /etc/php.ini grep ^error_log /etc/php.iniSample outputs:error_log = /var/log/httpd/php_error_logThe error_log directive defines the name of the file where script errors should be logged. The file should be writable by the web server's user. If the special value syslog is used, the errors are sent to the system logger instead. On Unix, this means syslogd and on Windows NT it means the event log. The system logger is not supported on Windows 95. If this directive is not set, errors are sent to the SAPI error logger. For example, it is an error log in Apache (/var/log/httpd/error_log file) or stderr in command line (CLI).This line define exact location for each php instance. If error_log set to syslog, open /var/log/messages file to view log. For example if error_log is set to /var/log/apache/php.errors, type the following to display error log: $ tail -f /var/log/apache/php.errors$ grep something /var/log/apache/php.errors
