ORA-06401: NETCMN: invalid driver designator tips Oracle Error Tips by Stephanie F. The Oracle docs note this on the ora-06401 error: ORA-06401 NETCMN: invalid driver designator Cause: The login (connect) string contains an invalid driver designator. Action: Correct the string and re-submit. Internet sources contain information on error ORA-06401, specifically when using database links. Here is the description of the ORA-06401 problem: You have multiple servers running Oracle version 7.3.4.2 with one or more databases on each one. You have several database links that were established and working prior to an upgrade. After upgrading and importing configuration files, the use of any database links on one server return an ORA-06401 error. This is a confusing error because it relates to an incorrect SQL*Net version 1 connect string and there aren't any version 1 products installed. Furthermore, there is no real explanation in the actions related to ORA-06401, except for " it relates to SQL*Net client software on the server (front end database trying to connect to a second database using SQL*Net on behalf of a database link)." There is resolution to ORA-06401 however: Solution Description: ===================== If you ftp configuration files from a working client or server machine in binary mode, the last character on each line is ^M. The oracle instant client http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35799806/excel-power-query-connect-to-oracle-error-oracle-ora-06401-netcmn-invalid-dr is installed and I tried both 32 and 64 bits versions. The oracle DB is 11.2.0.4.0 - 64bit. I can connect with sqlplus without a problem. The only references I can find to the problem are references to wrong characters in the tsnames.ora file, but I'm not using it, as I'm using the connection with all the info like server:1521/service_name Not sure what excel is really using to connect, but from the docs it should be using instant client. And it's working because I tested it through ODBC, which works fine with the driver. Any ideas? Solution - Correct the string and re-submit. What operating system is the database running on? Are you trying to connect to this database from the same machine? Have you tried running "tnsping" from a command window? Have you tried logging on without specifying a database service name (if running on same m/c as db)? How do you know that your database was successfully created and is up and running? A bit more information please might help us to find the answer to your problem. HTH Mark 0 Message Author Comment by:comradec2003-04-02 Database is on a unix server. trying to connect through a client pc. Have run tnsping but get the error TNS-03506 Failed to create address binding. The database is running as it can be connected to from another pc, without problem. I dont know what this error means so am not sure where to start looking. 0 LVL 1 Overall: Level 1 Oracle Database 1 Message Expert Comment by:griffm2003-04-02 OK. Let's go through a few checks. What OS is the PC running? Is TCP/IP networking set up on the PC? Can you simply ping the server from the PC by its' host name or IP address? If you can't ping the host name, have you updated your "hosts" file? What Oracle software is on your client PC? You say that you have updated tnsnames.ora with the correct information. Do you have any other tnsnames.ora on your machine (i.e. other installed Oracle software)? On your serv
