Configuration Newsletters What does "Error 103 - Error reported by DTC" mean ? Back to FAQ list Q. What does "Error 103 - Error reported by DTC." mean ? I get this message when using the RLink. What can I do when I receive it ? A. "Error 103" indicates that there is an error from the target. "Error reported by DTC" indicates that the RLink's data transfer module did not receive a response from the target, or that it received an inconsistent response. These errors are usually due to physical communication problems between the CPU and RLink target. This may be a bad connection on the debug (JTAG, SWD, SWIM) or Reset signals, a power supply problem, or (unlikely but possible) an external source of interference. In rare cases command errors (target selection for example) can give this problem. On a single board this problem can be more or less visible depending on the command, on the new content that you want to program, and even on previously programmed content. With older software versions (RKit-xxx), this error appeared for no reason because of a software bug. This problem is corrected in current versions.
Here are the things to check when you are in this situation: Does the same command (with the same parameters and the same hex file) work on another board? Do other commands work on this board? (try the examples provided with Ride7 or from the board manufacturer). Have you installed the latest versions of the software? (Ride7 and RKit-ARM). Has the board been altered or custom components plugged? If yes, then remove these changes as much as possible and see if the problem persists. If none of this helps, contact our support team. For a new design i would now go for SWD instead of JTAG to avoid conflicting with the SPI3 pins. I'm currently using Ride7 7.18.0903 and RKit 1.18.0903 in connection with an RLink pro and an Olimex STM32-H103. I cecked the settings for the Rlink and tried both SWD and JTAG. With RKit set to SWD the programming works, but if i set it to JTAG i get the error message 'Unable to read IDCode. Please check that http://support.raisonance.com/content/what-does-error-103-error-reported-dtc-mean-0 the target is connected.' The jumpers on the RLink are set to JTAG all the time. Now i'm a bit confused. Until one of the last versions of RKit SWD was not supported. With this version it seems to work. But JTAG should also work? Please clarify. Best regards Ralf

Keep in mind that once you have connected to the device using SWD, you must power it OFF and ON in order to connect to it using JTAG. Please check that this is not the source of the problem you observe. With the Rlink debugging and programming tool there are pcb header "JTAG-SWD" with a 20 pin header (as described above). This pcb header has 2 jumpers. The marking indicate "JTAG" and "SWD" setting. But NOTE: Only the first jumper close to the marking should be changed. I changed both of them, causing the "error reported by the DTC" printout...
