If the drive is full, SQL server will shut down. Do you mean you have 35GB free space on that drive? Tuesday, October 02, 2007 1:58 PM Reply | Quote 0 Sign in to vote It isn't just a matter of disk space. If you enable C2 level auditing, SQL Server will abort transactions if it can not write to the audit. That can occur if you run out of space, but it can also occur if the server is too busy to be able to allocate a thread to write to the audit trail. I'm not sure if this will throw this error, but it does have the ability to shut down SQL Server on failure, so

The trace is being started from a stored proc that calls the sp_trace_create procedure:EXEC @rc = sp_trace_create @TraceID OUTPUT, @options = 6, @tracefile http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1384381-391-1.aspx = @TraceFile, @maxfilesize = @MaxFileSizeInMB, @stoptime = @StopDateTime, @filecount = @MaxFileCountAn example looks like this:EXEC [dbo].[DefaultTrace] @MaxFileSizeInMB = 50, @StopDateTime = '2012-11-13 11:00 PM', @MaxFileCount = 999, @TraceFile = 'd:\temp\testing', @MinDurationFilter = 10000; The trace starts, the target file grows to 1MB, and then SQL shuts down. There are a few entries in the sql error log:11/13/2012 22:03:59,spid52,Unknown,Trace ID '2' was stopped because of an error. Cause: 16534123(failed to retrieve text for this error. Reason: 15100). Restart the trace after correcting the problem.11/13/2012 22:03:59,spid52,Unknown,Error: 19099

Aug 2002 16:36:38 We have SQL Server 2000 EE (sp2) running on Windows 2000 (sp2). We are intermittently (over the past 2 days) getting the following error: 566: Error writing audit trace. SQL Server is shutting down. C2 auditing has been enabled (and running well) for weeks (for SQL Server). We have plenty of disk space. Any clue would be appreciated. Top Why?: Event ID 17055, 566 : Error writing audit trace. SQL Server is shutting down. by Bill Hollinshead [M » Thu, 29 Aug 2002 23:14:12 Hi Scott, I suspect the answer will be in the system event log (scsi, controller, driver error), although it would be best to inspect the SQL Server errorlog as well. If neither of those have the error, then enable diskperf and start perfmon. Have perfmon collect about 200 data points (of all counters and all instances) and check out open file handle counts and disk queuing (to and if C2 isn't really needed, then you can trace the same audit events (using trace procedures) as C2's (which traces all audit events) without enabling C2, and thus keep the server up (even though some external process has caused a failure to write a trace log).
