This is a newly built server and IIS has been never installed. The requirement was to install SQL Server 2005 and SQL Server Reporting Services (for which IIS is a required component). The SQL admin has installed SQL Server 2005, SOL Server Reporting Services and also the .NET Framework 2.0 without installing IIS. I am asked to install IIS 6.0 now. When I tried to install IIS 6.0, I got the following message during install though install did complete. Error writing encrypted data to the Web Server's configuration database (Metabase). 0x80070005=Access is denied. Press 'Retry' to retry or 'Write UnEncrypted' to write the data unencrypted. You can change this data back to encrypted after setup has completed. I get three buttons, Retry, Write UnEncrypted and Write UnEncrypted All. I eventually clicked Write UnEncrypted and I got a second error message Error writing encrypted data to the Web Server's configuration database (Metabase). =The handle is invalid. The problem now is WWW Service does not start. I am wondering if this is a permission issue though I am logged on as a Domain Admin (as the error messages during the install indicate). When I check the System Event Log, I see the following Event Type: Error Event Source: W3SVC Event Category: None Event ID: 1036 Date: 5/6/2009 Time: 11:00:15 AM User: N/A Computer: Description: A failure occurred while initializing the configuration manager for the World Wide Web Publishing Service. It should show the error. –Chris Down Mar 21 at 16:58 Don't use openssl. It's very hard to use correctly, it's just a debugging tool. The robust way to encrypt a file is with gpg. –Gilles Mar 21 at 22:56 @MelBurslan It might be yes. Because I find a new file is created, but nothing in that file. –Wedoso Mar 23 at 14:40 @Gilles Can you give an example for my case? I tried "gpg -d $encryptedfile" but got error messages. BTW, my encrypted file name is ".aes" –Wedoso Mar 23 at 14:54 | show 2 more comments 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote It seems I don't have enough space to write decrypted files.
