The issue is resolved if I restart VS2003 but I need to do this every time i build the project. I have been googling and stackoverflowing ;) for a few http://stackoverflow.com/questions/35662865/fatal-error-lnk1201-error-writing-to-program-database-visual-studio-2003 hours and have tried the following proposed solution: Change the Debug Information Format from Zi to Z7. (Property -> C/C++ -> General -> Debug Information Format) This did not work Change Visual Studio Compatibility Mode to Windows XP SP3 This did not work Add the following in the Pre-Build Event : net stop "Machine Debug Manager" net start "Machine Debug Manager" This produced the following error: System Error 5 has occurred. Access is denied. This could be because I do not have Admin Access on this machine. I have not tried this one because I am not allowed to download untrusted code at my work. Run FreePDB.cmd posted by Tony76 here Changed the Symbol Path as seen here: This did not work What I know: This error could occur if the pdb file exceeds 1GB but mine is only 10MB. My limitations: I do not have Admin Access on this computer Cannot run untrusted software (Work Computer) visual-studio debugging pdb-files share|improve this question edited Feb 27 at 16:19 asked Feb 26 at 22:24 Rana 554326 This happens to me (somewhat frequently) when my projects/solutions are on a network share and/or I don't have write access

Solved Visual Studio C++ Windows 7 pdb error Posted on 2011-09-14 Visual C++.NET Windows 7 MS Development-Other 1 Verified Solution 6 Comments 1,915 Views Last Modified: 2012-06-21 Hi, I copied a project from an XP machine, where everything worked fine, over to a windows 7 machine, where I have the following errors: 1>client : error PRJ0007 : Could not create output directory 'c:\users\phild\documents\visual studio 2005\projects\gex\client\ c:\users\phild\documents\visual studio 2005\projects\gex\client\debug'. 1>Linking... 1>LINK : fatal error LNK1201: error writing to program database 'c:\users\phild\documents\visual studio 2005\projects\gex\client\ c:\users\phild\documents\visual studio 2005\projects\gex\client\debug\client.pdb'; check for insufficient disk space, invalid path, or insufficient privilege In actual fact the 'debug' folder has been created by an earlier pass of the compiler and several v80.obj's have been added and other files as well. At some point the compiler decides it cannot create the debug folder and later the linker decides it cannot write to the pdb. If I create a separate standalone project and write some test piece of code, then all works fine. I've tried this starting Visual Studio as admin. Still fails. I've tried both VS2005 and VS2008, with exactly the same issue. There is several hundred gig of free space. I can delete the debug folder and it will be created, files added, but then fail as above, so it is not a permissions issue. I've moved everything to a folder right off of c:; same issues. so it is not some pathing issue. I've stopped and started Visual Studio, rebooted etc... still fails. Any ideas?
