Executing Grub-install /dev/sdb Failed
best answers are voted up and rise to the top “Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda” when installing GRUB up vote 15 down vote favorite 4 I recently bought a shiny new Lenovo Yoga 2 Pro and I want to dual boot it with Ubuntu for studying purposes. Its built-in OS is Windows 8.1 and it has a 256GB SSD. I've made a separate 90GB partition manually install grub just for Ubuntu and a live USB to install it. The first time everything seemed to work great, I solved the wifi issued by blacklisting ideapad_laptop, the installation went flawlessly and Ubuntu worked fine. When I got up the next morning and turned on my laptop it booted into Windows right away without ever showing the GRUB menu. So I tried to reset, and checked my partitions with the Disk Manager and everything looked fine. Since I couldn't find a solution online I went ahead and formatted the partition to try and install again. This time and every time since, the installation was aborted and I got a fatal error saying: Unable to install GRUB in /dev/sda Executing `grub-install /dev/sda` failed. This is a fatal error. Can anyone please suggest a solution to this problem? If any further information is needed I would be happy to provide it. Thanks. Did you allow Ubuntu to Encrypt the drive or choose the Wipe Drive & Install Ubuntu option? Linux! so, i got a old (≈2005) laptop and wanted to Ubuntu. Downloaded the installer, burned it on a DVD, inserted to laptop, rebooted, and got the step-by-step install GUI screen. All good, until, near the end, i got this error: Executing 'grub-install /dev/sdb' failed. This is a fatal error. WTF is “grub” and WTF is “sdb”? Turns out, GRUB is the critical software for machine to start (called bootloader), and “sdb” is actually the CD drive. So, Ubuntu wants to install the OS onto the CD it's running from. Can Quality Assurance be possibly worse than this? Viva Linux! For the record, this is “ubuntu-12.04.1-desktop-i386.iso”. (my first Linux installation is 1998, MkLinux and Debian Linux.) Solution Try re-install, and it should work. Choose the main hard-disk partition to put the “GRUB” on (that's usually /dev/sba). Tech Info on Booting Here's some relevant tech info.
