3.4.0, apply some patches and compile. Instructions and the hacks that make it work come from George Helffrich. Instructions Requirements If you haven't done so already, install the Xcode toolset. https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=43754 This procedure has been tested with Xcode 2.3 and 2.4, other versions may work but no guarantees! Download and patch GCC Source code Download the gcc 3.4.0 (exact version is important) source tarball (gcc-3.4.0.tar.gz) from the Gnu source repository: ftp.gnu.org/gnu/gcc/gcc-3.4.0/gcc-3.4.0.tar.gz. If this site is overloaded, try one of the many mirrors. (Leopard) In order to get this to install under Leopard http://www1.gly.bris.ac.uk/~wookey/MEFTLG/g77.htm (10.5.1) I had to change my default shell from /bin/tcsh to /bin/bash while doing the compilation. (See instructions here). This is probably fixable in the configure stage, though. Unpack the source-code somewhere, say /usr/local/src/gcc-3.4.0/. Download the diffs file to make the necessary changes: gcc-3.4.0.diffs, and save it somewhere, say /tmp. Apply the diffs file from the directory above the gcc source-code: cd /usr/local/src patch -p0 < /tmp/gcc-3.4.0.diffs Build the compiler Make a build directory: mkdir /usr/local/src/gcc-3.4.0-darwin cd to this directory and configure: cd /usr/local/src/gcc-3.4.0-darwin ../gcc-3.4.0/configure --enable-altivec --enable-languages=c,f77 Build (this step will take ages, so get comfortable). make bootstrap make install Et voila! You should have a working g77 compiler installed in /usr/local/bin. You will also have a gcc compiler installed here. If you use the Xcode tools you might want to rename this new compiler (i.e., the one in /usr/local/bin) to gcc-3.4.0-patched or something. This should prevent collisions between this and the Xcode version. WARNING! Installing gcc in /usr/local can cause (avoidable) problems with Software Update. Known Issues Compilation (of g77 itself) fails with error messages like: /var/tmp/ccKRSYUy.s:8065:indirect jmp without `*'
