Please disconnect and reconnect the ipod, then try again." Ive phoned apple and even they cannot figure this out. This is my last go at fixing it before I decide to ship it in for repairs. All I do is disconnect and reconnect again and voilá, iTunes recognizes the iPod. Whenever this happens, how do you disconnect? The following instructions are for the iPod Classic (generation 6), although it may work with other models. Apple released an update to the iPod software on September 14 2007 and this may fix the problem. This should help you get the software. Please note, there is always a possibility of damage or loss of information caused by trying to fix ones' own iPod and you proceed at your own risk. Always back up your data and seek professional assistance if in doubt. Steps 1 Look for -50 symptoms. When trying to sync iPod, change iPod settings, or restore iPod from within iTunes you may see one of the following error messages: "The iPod "Customer's iPod" cannot be updated. An unknown error occurred (-50)" "The disk could not be read from or written to" "The iPod "Customer's iPod" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (1418) 2 Note that the products affected are: iPod (all models) iTunes 7.x (Windows XP) 3 Try to fix this symptom, A -50 error may be caused by an issue with the digital signing of Windows XP drivers. Following the steps below to re-register several .dll files mentioned below may resolve this issue. Before proceeding however, try to restore the iPod using the latest version of iTunes. If you are unable to restore it or the symptom reappears, then follow the steps below: Disconnect the iPod from the computer and close iTunes.
