top Dual Boot windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.10 grub error up vote 0 down vote favorite I recently purchased a new HP Laptop with Windows 8 pre-installed in it. Then I installed ubuntu 12.10 from a bootable usb-stick. Now when I restarted my Laptop, instead of showing grub menu in which I have choices to pick which OS to run, it straightaway booted Windows. 12.10 in it, and ran boot-recovery software. It gave me this url. Now when I restarted, grub menu was displayed, and I could run ubuntu from it. But when I chose windows 8 from the menu, I got an error that it could not find some efi file and returned to grub menu. Then again I inserted usb, ran boot-recovery software, and restarted, and it gave me this url, but this time, it didn't even shown grub menu, it straight booted the windows 8. I don't know what to do so that grub menu is proper and I could boot both OS. I have spent whole day on searching and trying various things, but I didn't get the expected results. Also, while searching on net, I found this some UEFI issue (I don't know about it technically). So is it windows 8 problem or hardware problem ? If I install windows 7, then can I properly install ubuntu 12.10 on that ? 12.10 grub2 dual-boot windows-8 share|improve this question asked Feb 22 '13 at 15:57 Happy Mittal 12516 What version of Ubuntu 12.10 did you install? 32 or 64-bit? –horIzoN Feb 22 '13 at 16:18 @nerof61 : 64 bit –Happy Mittal Feb 22 '13 at 18:15 ad

I just installed fedora 10 using the GUI install, and when I try to boot, it gets me to the kernel must be grub command line grub> when i enter 'boot', it gives me grub error 8: kernel must be loaded before booting. Not sure how to fix this, any help is appreciated. (I'm pretty new to linux). Also, I used to have fedora 9, and i had an option to boot fedora or 'other', which is windows. How do I go about setting up something similar in this case? EDIT: Also, when I type root, it tells me that the partition (hd2,0) (i assume the one i installed FC10: 3rd hdd, first partition) is an unspecified file system ... I think something happened to grub when it removed my old partition with FC9... It sounds like you may have upgrade-installed from Fedora 9. Anyway, it happens often enough. I agree with your desire to manually boot the system from that grub>
Posts: 8 GRUB2 can't load my system Hello everyone,I'm new to Archlinux. After having installed the system and configuring it for a few weeks I decided to install GRUB2. I removed GRUB, installed GRUB2 and rebooted. Now I'm stuck with a command line (grub>) and I can't start my system. I have tried several things, booted with a live CD and changed the grub.cfg file, used the command setup to install GRUB to a different partition. I don't know where to go from here...My grub.cfg looks like this: set timeout=5set default=0menuentry "Arch Linux"set root=(hd0,0)linux /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda1 roinitrd /kernel26.imgI have a 250gb SATA HD with 4 partitions (sda1-4). My first partition contains kernel26.img and a grub folder containing all the files from grub. My system is on the partition sda3.Can anyone help me? If you need more info, please tell me.Thanks. Grub2 starts numbering disks from 0 but partitions start from 1, so the Arch Linux part of your grub.cfg should look like:menuentry "Arch Linux" { set root=(hd0,1) linux /vmlin
