I am using jflex and cup as my generators but i'm a bit stuck with what a lexical error is. Also, is it recommended that i use the state feature of jflex? it feels wrong as it seems like the parser is better suited to

handling that aspect. and do you recommend any other tools to create the language. I'm sorry if i'm impatient but it's due on tuesday. compiler-theory jflex share|improve this question asked Aug 14 '10 at 18:57 cesar 2,414103052 add a comment| 4 Answers 4 active oldest votes up vote 11 down vote accepted A lexical error is any input that can be rejected by the lexer. This generally results from token recognition falling off the end of the rules you've defined. For example (in no particular syntax): [0-9]+ ===> NUMBER token [a-zA-Z] ===> LETTERS token anything else ===> error! If you think about a lexer as a finite state machine that accepts valid input strings, then errors are going to be any input strings that do not result in that finite state machine reaching an accepting state. The rest of your question was rather unclear to me. If you already have some tools you are using, then perhaps you're best to learn how to achieve what you want to achieve using those tools (I have no experience with either of the tools you mentioned). EDIT: Having re-read your question, there's a second part I can answer. It is possible that a language could have no lexical errors - it's the language in which any input

Lexical Error in Novice Academic Writing Lately, I have been thinking quite a lot about what can possible go wrong with someone's vocabulary usage when they are writing an academic essay. I've started to keep a running tally http://englishforacademicpurposes.blogspot.com/2009/04/lexical-error-in-novice-academic.html of all the errors I can think of, and this is my list so https://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20101028174855AArmLB2 far. I started off by looking at the detailed marking code for the Effective Writing Test (http://www.efwr.ucalgary.ca/markingcode), and I went on from there. I think some of the items in the list might overlap, but I think I'm off to a good start.Semantic errorA word is used that had the wrong meaning for the context.MiscollocationWords are used in lexical error inappropriate combinations, as in the difference between a torrential rainstorm and a torrential snowstorm*, or highly educated vs. greatly educated*.Topic constraintsRegister constraintsGenre constraintsCertain words can only be used in certain situations, depending on the topic, register and genre.Inappropriate synonym choiceSynonyms have different connotations. An example of this is the difference between Scott is a famous teacher at the University of Calgary, and Scott is a notorious* teacher at the University of Calgary. lexical error example (or maybe I am notorious . . . )Trite languageThis involves the use of clichés and overused expressions such as rabbits are not a valid food choice because they are as cute as a button. Another example would be, it's important to think outside the box when dealing with financial problems.Excessive jargonThis occurs when overly technical and specialized vocabulary is used when writing for a general audience.Pretentious word choiceBig words are not necessarily better words. Overly complicated words and language are not better than simple and precise more common words and language.Immature word choiceThis occurs when writing about daddies instead of fathers, bunnies instead of rabbits, and choo-choos instead of trains.Over repetitionThe same words are used over and over again. For example: Completing high school should be mandatory. Mandatory high school classes will keep young people off the streets. If high school becomes mandatory, students will learn more. If school is mandatory, society will benefit. If it is not mandatory, there will continue to be problems. That is why a high school education must be mandatory.Artificial variationToo many synonyms are used making the writing seem unnatural. For example, Cats are important pets for senior citizens. Without their kitties, many old people feel lonely. Once arriving in the golden years, a feline companion is a n

Trending Now Answers Best Answer: A lexical error is making the wrong choice of word for the stylistic context. The word is roughly correct, but wrong in 'flavour'. For instance, wrong level of formality: "The kidneys are paired organs with several functions. They serve homeostatic functions such as the regulation of electrolytes and maintenance of acid-base balance; they also produce wee-wee" (See here http://books.google.co.uk/books?id=7UPAr... for typical forms of lexical error in learners of English). A grammatical error is when you actually break the rules for grammatical structure in the language. For instance, "The two mans came into the room" (wrong plural formation) or "That were me you saw" (wrong verb form for standard English singular past tense). A garmmatical error is hard to define. . . it can be using the wrong form (conjugation) of a verb, using the wrong type of word (an adjective instead of an adverb, for example) - there are a lot of possibilities on this one. A contextual text error is using the wrong word in place of another - for example, if you were to say "Call me when you get their", instead of "Call me when you get there". Hope this helps.
