Again: LILO 22.5.9 still gives Error: duplicated volume ID - Linux I read in the news that this error had been fixed in version 22.5.9. I'm still receiving it (maybe due to a unusual conf). Here my config and what happened: .. linux slackware 10.0 (kernel 2.4.26) .. Asus PC-DL deluxe dual Xeon (flashed BIOS to vers. 1.005) .. Adaptec 2120S ... Adaptec 2120S RAID board (flashed BIOS V4.1.0, build 7244) . IBM disk scsi id 1, master . IBM disk scsi id 2, mirror HW copy of disk 1 . IBM disk scsi id 6, spare space (removing it in Adaptec Ctrl-A fix the problem) .. IDE DVD-RW on hda (previously on hdc with same error, removing it in the BIOS doesn't change things) With just disk 1 and 2 (mirror of 1) and IDE drive, no problem. The problem showed up when I entered my Adaptec config and added disk 6 (SCSI id); now at boot time, even before seeing the LILO red screen I get the error LILO: Error: Duplicated Volume ID After the red screen I managed to get "BIOS data check bypassed" by adding: suppress-boot-time-BIOS-data in lilo.conf. Without this option, it was just hanging with the message "BIOS data check" (where a Ctr-Alt-Del, would then reboot "properly" with the same "BIOS data check bypassed". I can see all the SCSI devices and the DVD but I'm wondering why this happens and if it can harm the stability of my system. When installing lilo I see apparently correct and different volume IDs for disk 1 and disk 6. My lilo.conf: ###########

Some of them are being installed in servers that only need one disk (in that case this is a non-issue), but lilo error duplicate some are being installed in servers that will use 2 of them in RAID1. In another case we're building a tool to assist the admin in replacing a faulty disk by ensuring the new disk is large enough and then copying the MBR and Partition Table, and then adding it to the RAID1. When this happens LILO complains about duplicate volume IDs (which makes sense). This is why I would like to generate new volume IDs for the partition being added to the RAID1 array. Does it make sense to use sfdisk to rewrite a disks partition table, or is there a more straightforward command/technique to create a new volume id for an existing volume? linux raid software-raid mdadm fdisk share|improve this question asked Oct 27 '10 at 14:32 andyortlieb 604618 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 1 down vote accepted Read the mbr from the disk, change the disk signature which is the 4 bytes @ offset 440 in the mbr then write it back to the disk. dd if=/dev/sda of=mbr.dat bs=512 count=1 sigchange.pl # see script below dd if=newmbr.dat of=/dev/sda bs=512 c
