2009) Scratch n' Match is an occasional sweepstakes promotion from the New York Daily News. The promotion has been held on and off throughout the Spring and the Fall since September 2004. In March 2005 an error on a number was published and then when people followed that wrong number hundreds of people won and they flooded the Daily News building. Each card has eight scratch-off areas with 15 spaces—’one for each day including two for Sunday. The player scratches off spaces corresponding to the number printed in each day's paper. If three like amounts are revealed the player wins that amount of money. Prizes[edit] The top prize has changed since the game was first released. At first, the top prize was $100,000. In September 2005, the top prize began at $100,000 for the first week and increased by $10,000 every week — $100,000 the first, $110,000 the next, up to $250,000 the final week.[citation needed] In 2006, the top prize was $1 million (paid through an annuity, with no cash option) but only 3 were offered with two out of the three being won. The most recent version goes back to offering $100,000. Misprint incident[edit] In March 2005, the Daily News printed incorrect numbers to be scratched off, leading thousands of angry subscribers demanding their $1 million. Melodie Donovan, an administrator for a legal aid society, took home $7 million — the second-largest prize given out Wednesday. Donovan said she was overwhelmed when she first realized she’d hit the winning combo on a New York Millions scratch-off ticket in late June. She bought it at at News & Tobacco on Myrtle Ave., she said Wednesday at a ceremony Resort Worlds Casino in Jamaica, Queens. “I play the larger tickets when I’m feeling lucky," she explained. “The first two tickets I played were non-winners. I won a couple prizes on the New York Millions ticket in the past so I decided to give it another try,” she said. She scratched the ticket in the store and “almost fainted,” she said. On Aug. 22, Newman purchased a $2 scratch-off ticket that matched the number 16, making it worth $20,000. "When I saw that $20,000, you don't know how excited I was," she told WJLA. However, lottery officials told her there had been a big mistake and the ticket was issued in error. Lottery experts say a normal ticket has the winning numbers on the top. Newman's ticket had the winning numbers listed on the bottom, meaning the machine may have cut the ticket in the wrong spot. Officials with the store where the ticket was purchased said only trained lottery officials are allowed to load the machines. "I want the money that I thought I won. If you look at the ticket, it says I won this money. It wasn't anything that I did wrong. It's what they did wrong," she said. Newman has filed a complaint with the Virginia Lottery. Lottery officials have not responded to WJLA's request for comment.
