I http://stackoverflow.com/questions/11816428/setuptools-error-in-python have always installed packages with setup.py install command. But now when I try to install ansicolors package I get: importerror "No Module named Setuptools" I have no idea what to do because I haven't have Setuptools never and still I have installed many packages with setup.py install command without setuptools and now I should get setuptools. I can't even install setuptools because I have python 3.3 and setuptools doesn't support python 3. Why my install command http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14426491/python-3-importerror-no-module-named-setuptools doesn't work anymore? python module package setup.py python-3.3 share|improve this question edited Sep 19 at 13:11 j0k 17.4k114960 asked Jan 20 '13 at 16:20 user1994934 298138 add a comment| 7 Answers 7 active oldest votes up vote 114 down vote accepted Your setup.py file needs setuptools. Many of the Python packages use distutils for the distribution, but some use setuptools, a more complete package. Here is a question about the differences between them. Regarding Python 3.3, you should install distribute instead. It is a more recent package that works in the same way as setuptools (it's even called setuptools internally). UPDATE (Oct 2014): Distribute has been merged with setuptools 0.7, so just get setuptools for both Python 2.7 and 3.x To install this on Debian: sudo apt-get install python-setuptools For Python 3.x sudo apt-get install python3-setuptools share|improve this answer edited Dec 1 '14 at 14:45 answered Jan 20 '13 at 16:27 tiago 7,44463660 Hey thanks for your answer ! I installed distribute and setup.py now works fine. But i installed 3 packages and none of those didn't work. I hope this is just bad luck and not because distribute. –user1994934 Jan 20 '13 at 19:30 7 On Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install python-setuptools –YumYumYum May 3 '13 at 2:43 thanks for this post.. helped me a lot..Many peoples are advicin

Download ez_setup.py (https://bitbucket.org/pypa/setuptools/downloads/ez_setup.py) Run python ez_setup.py Then rerun your upgrade (e.g. pip install --upgrade pyramid) Also note that pip-1.4 (unreleased) has fixes to prevent this Cause distribute-0.7.3 is just an empty wrapper that only serves to require the new setuptools (setuptools>=0.7) so that it will be installed. (if you don't know yet, the "new setuptools" is a merge of distribute and setuptools back into one project) distribute-0.7.3 does it's job well, when the upgrade is done in isolation. E.g. if you're currently on distribute-0.6.X, then running pip install -U setuptools works fine to upgrade you to setuptools>=0.7. The problem occurs when: 1. you are currently using an older distribute (i.e. 0.6.X) 2. and you try to use pip to upgrade a package that depends on setuptools or distribute. As part of the upgrade process, pip builds an install list that ends up including distribute-0.7.3 and setuptools>=0.7 , but they can end up being separated by other dependencies in the list, s
