up vote 2 down vote favorite 1 I've got a local copy of an ASP.NET web application running in Visual Studio 2010. The code is an exact duplicate of the code running on my dev environment. When I try to connect to my Oracle database through ASP.NET, it throws a "TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified." The weird thing is this database is in my TNSNAMES.ORA file, and ora 12154 odp net when I use TNSPING or Microsoft Data Link to connect, it works fine. I tried tinkering with the permissions on my Oracle directory, but that didn't seem to help. asp.net visual-studio-2010 oracle share|improve this question edited Aug 29 '12 at 13:03 asked Aug 29 '12 at 12:41 Tim 2,52132548 betting on a x86/x64 issue. Make sure you have the PATH configured to use the Oracle bin folder: PATH=C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1\bin Make sure your tnsnames.ora file is in the directory: C:\Oracle\product\11.2.0\client_1\network\admin You can try and use the foll

I've not used Oracle before. At the point the web app trys connecting to Oracle it's throwing the above exception. Plenty of other posts refer to this exception but I feel I've followed all advice to no avail. Here's an over view of my setup: I've installed Oracle client version 11.2.0 to home dir "C:\app\TroughT\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1" I've added a tnsnames.ora file from another developer machine (where this all works) into "C:\app\TroughT\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\NETWORK\ADMIN" I've changed the APP_BASE variable in sqlnet.ora to "C:\app\TroughT\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\log" I have (for now) given Everyone full control over the entire dbhome_1 directory and subdirectories In the Oracle Net Manager I've tested the relevant connection with the same security credentials used in my ASP.NET connection string and it tests OK I've added a TNS_ADMIN system variable with value "C:\app\TroughT\product\11.2.0\dbhome_1\NETWORK\ADMIN" We must have missed something but I just don't know what. Please help! UPDATE: I have found that replacing the SID in the connection string with

I have an ASP.Net MVC WebApi (MVC 5.1.0, Framework 4.5.1) project that uses Oracle.DataAccess. It ora 12154 error runs on the local IIS server via a URL that's in my hosts file. It has a connection string connecting to an Oracle database. It works fine. I have a 'normal' ASP.Net MVC (MVC 5.2.2, Framework 4.5.2) project that uses Oracle.ManagedDataAccess and Dapper. It runs on the local IIS server via a URL that's in my hosts file. It uses the SAME connection string (barring the providerName) to (attempt to) connect to an Oracle database. it does not work, throwing ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified when I try to open the connection.
connect identifier specified could not be resolved into a connect descriptor using one of the naming methods configured. For example, if the type of connect identifier used was a net service name then the net service name could not be found in a naming method repository, or the repository could not be located or reached. Action: - If you are using local naming (TNSNAMES.ORA file): - Make sure that "TNSNAMES" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA) - Verify that a TNSNAMES.ORA file exists and is in the proper directory and is accessible. - Check that the net service name used as the connect identifier exists in the TNSNAMES.ORA file. - Make sure there are no syntax errors anywhere in the TNSNAMES.ORA file. Look for unmatched parentheses or stray characters. Errors in a TNSNAMES.ORA file may make it unusable. - If you are using directory naming: - Verify that "LDAP" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA). - Verify that the LDAP directory server is up and that it is accessible. - Verify that the net service name or database name used as the connect identifier is configured in the directory. - Verify that the default context being used is correct by specifying a fully qualified net service name or a full LDAP DN as the connect identifier - If you are using easy connect naming: - Verify that "EZCONNECT" is listed as one of the values of the NAMES.DIRETORY_PATH parameter in the Oracle Net profile (SQLNET.ORA). - Make sure the host, port and service name specified are correct. - Try enclosing the connect identifier in quote marks. See the Oracle Net Services Administrators Guide or the Oracle operating system specific guide for more information on naming.
