The (rather silly) solution for us was to add a comment to the very top of the tnsnames.ora file. So for Step #8 in the linked instructions, the tnsnames.ora file would have this instead: # Leave whitespace before your first entry below... VIS = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST =

Still running TOAD 9.x, no problem. This really threw ora 12154 me off for a minute, so I thought I would share the resolution. You are likely running a 64-bit Windows OS and have installed TOAD into C:\Program Files (x86)\.... I simply copied over my entire Quest Software directory from C:\Program Files (x86)\... to C:\Program Files\..., and restarted the TOAD.exe. Everything is working great, without having to reinstall anything. PS: Not sure who ora 12154 toad to blame here. Vendors (like Oracle and TOAD) should know Microsoft is capable of doing strange things with important directory names (using spaces and, in this case, "strange" characters like parentheses)…and of course, Microsoft should simply stop perpetuating the use of these characters in important directories. UPDATE on 1/12/11: I had to install TOAD again today and noticed a message in the installer about directories with parentheses -- glad to see Quest now added a note about it (see screenshot below). Funny thing is, even though I installed to C:\Program Files\, there were still files created in C:\Program Files (x86)\ that I had to manually copy and paste over. This time, by the way, I cut and paste which also worked -- so no files are actually needed in the C:\Program Files (x86)\ folders. ORA-12154: TNS could not resolve service name tips Question: I need help with this error: ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve service name.Answer: The ORA-12154 is a very common error, always related to your local copy of the tnsnames.ora file, your listener configuration and your database name aliases. Make sure that your listener is listening for the same service name that you are using. Your service name might have an alias, so check for global (world) entries and local entries. Check: $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin/tnsnames.ora Check your global_name setting with this SQL: select * from global_name; The query value should match your init.ora parms for db_name and db_domain, You can change the global_name with an ALTER DATABASE command, as follows: alter database rename global_name to xxx; Also see these notes on configuring your tnsnames.ora file and troubleshooting network errors. Rampant author Steve Callan notes this on the ORA-12154 error: "One of the most common errors related to improper configuration is the "ORA-12154: TNS: could not resolve service name" error. It is not uncommon for new users of Oracle to spend hours upon hours trying to figure out what their mistake is when ORA-12154 appears."
