connect to the appropriate Oracle database, we'll need to expound a bit on how Oracle behaves and, therefore, what is causing this issue in the first place. SIDs vs SERVICE_NAMES It ora 12505 solution is important to understand the (slight) difference between what Oracle defines as a ora 12505 error in sql developer SID compared to a SERVICE_NAME, as we'll use this information to create a proper connection string later on. In Oracle, listener refused the connection with the following error ora-12505 in oracle sql developer the system identifier (or SID) is a local identifier of up to eight characters in length that is used to identify a particular database and differentiate it from other databases on the system. ora 12505 error in oracle 11g Often the SID is the prefix word or DB_UNIQUE_NAME that precedes the DB_DOMAIN. For example, the SID of our bookstore database, as seen in in the full global database name of bookstore.company.com. SERVICE_NAMES, on the other hand, represent the names by which database instances can be connected to. A SERVICE_NAME will typically follow the format of the SID followed by the database domain, like so:

DB_UNIQUE_NAME.DB_DOMAIN The TNS Listener When a client is attempting to connect to an Oracle database, rather than connecting to the database directly, there is a broker service that intervenes and handles the connection request for the client. This broker application is known as the listener and it performs the task of listening for incoming client requests. When a request is received, the listener processes and forwards that request onto the appropriate Oracle database server using a service handler, which just acts as the connection between the listener and the database server. TNS Names and Configuration When connecting to an Oracle database, typically your database server will have tnsnames.ora, which is a configuration file that informs the server about NET_SERVICE_NAMES which are valid database connections. By default, this file is located at ORACLE_HOME/network/admin. For example, a NET_SERVICE_NAME descriptor in tnsnames.ora may be formatted like this: myDatabaseNetService = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = tcp)(HOST = localhost)(PORT = 1521)(QUEUESIZE = 100)) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = bookstore.company.com) ) ) This would define a NET_SERVICE_NAME using the SERVICE_NAME we discussed earlier (bookstore.company.com) and connecting to localhost through port 1521. Can you do this from your command line: tnsping ORCL; and paste what you get. Rahul. Message was edited by: RPuttagunta Like Show 0 Likes(0) Actions 2. The SIDs that are currently registered with the listener can be obtained by typing: LSNRCTL SERVICES on the Server These SIDs correspond to SID_NAMEs in TNSNAMES.ORA or DB_NAME in the initialization file. does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor" when testing database connection Technote (troubleshooting) Problem(Abstract) I.T. administrator launches "Controller Configuration" and creates new http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21606207 database connection to Oracle database schema. Administrator clicks 'Test Connection' but receives an error message. Symptom Connection failed Error Details ORA-12505: TNS:listener does not currently know of SID given in connect descriptor Cause There are many possible causes for the "ORA-12505: TNS:listener ..." error, such as: Scenario #1 - Incorrect configuration of Oracle database server Specifically, the LISTENER on the Oracle database server ora 12505 was not configured correctly. Scenario #2 - Incorrect configuration of Oracle database client (installed on Controller application server) For more details, see separate IBM Technote #1447103. Diagnosing the problem Scenario #1 Logon to the Oracle database server and launch a command prompt. Type the following command: lsnrctl status In one real-life example, the message included the following text: The listener supports no services ora 12505 error Resolving the problem Scenario #1 - Incorrect configuration of Oracle database server Ask your I.T. department's Oracle DBA to reconfigure the Oracle server's listener correctly. Real-life example: In one real-life example, the customer wanted to connect to a database called "CCR11G". In this case the solution was to modify the "listener.ora" file from: LISTENER = (DESCRIPTION_LIST = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = MYSERVERNAME)(PORT = 1521)) ) (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1521)) ) ) ADR_BASE_LISTENER = E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\log to: SID_LIST_LISTENER = (SID_LIST = (SID_DESC = (SID_NAME = PLSExtProc) (ORACLE_HOME = E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2) (PROGRAM = extproc) ) (SID_DESC= (GLOBAL_DBNAME=ccr11g) (ORACLE_HOME=E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2) (SID_NAME=ccr11g) ) ) LISTENER = (DESCRIPTION_LIST = (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = IPC)(KEY = EXTPROC1522)) (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = MYSERVERNAME)(PORT = 1521)) ) ) ADR_BASE_LISTENER = E:\app\Administrator\product\11.2.0\dbhome_2\log Afterwards, restart the listener by typing: lsnrctl stop lsnrctl start Scenario #2 - Incorrect configuration of Oracle database client See separate IBM Technote #1447103.
