View > Layout... Uncheck: Show Preview Pane Apply, OK to save and close. Is your Inbox full? If so, empty it, move messages you want to keep to folders of your own creation in Outlook Express. Keep the Inbox empty and any other default folder in Outlook Express. Inbox, Outbox, Deleted Items, Drafts and Sent Items folders. Let us know if that makes a difference or not.
