I was having the exact same problem and finally figured out the problem tonight. The Yahoo POP3 server was telling my computer that there were 19 new email messages to download, but in reality there were 20 new messages. This was causing outlook express to fail with the 0x80004005 error. Here's what I did to fix the problem: I logged into my account on the yahoo website and went to my email page on the web. I then created a new folder called "temp" in my webmail account. Then I moved all my new emails from my webmail inbox to the new "temp" folder. Then I moved all those new emails right back to my webmail inbox, and that fixed the incorrect count. After that I ran outlook express and sure enough, it downloaded all my messages with no problems. Just note that the 0x80004005 error is used by Microsoft for alot of different reasons, so your problem may not be the same as mine. One sure way to tell is to count the number of email messages in your webmail inbox when you log into your yahoo account online. See if that number matches the the number that's displayed next to the "inbox" word. If the counts don't match, then you're having the same problem as I had. Source

Pertinent Info: My outlook express ISP is MSN Dell Dimension 4400 Intel Pentium 4, 1600 MHz 256 MB system RAM NVIDIA GeForce2 MX/MX 400 Windows XP Home v:5.1.2600 SP 1.0 Internet Explorer v:6.0 SP1.0 Firefox 0.8 Note: Last night I upgraded my ZoneAlarm to version 5.0. I made no changes to the original settings. This is the first time I've checked my mail after outlook express 6 the ZA upgrade. I've used Outlook Express 6 for the past two years and it has been pretty much trouble free. I have two MSN Hotmail accounts using OE. Today, while attempting to receive mail (OE>Send/Receive) I received five (5) errors on one account....common to all five is Error number 0x800004005. I Googled the error number and some of the suggested fixes are: 1) per M$ Knowledge Base Article-299496..."Corrupted .mbx file" Rename Inbox.mbx to Inbox.old Restart Outlook Express 2) (another link-not M$)....The pop3uidl.dat file is corrupted. "Try deleting this file (with Outlook Express closed)". I might mention also that between the two files I have the typical Server account: "http://oe.msn.msnmail.hotmail" One of the error messages says: Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP Server. Protocol: HTTP mail Port: 0 Secure (SSL) No Socket Error: 12019 Error number 0x80004005 I would appreciate any help, Thanks, Telstar Telstar, May 25, 2004 #1 kiwiguy Joined: Aug 17, 2003 Messages: 17,584 Google also suggests: SYMPTOMS When you try to download e-mail from your Hotmail account,
