Unfortunately, something is blocking it from completing. There is nothing bad about this, and you can stop it by turning off the auto-compact setting: Of course it would be better to figure out why it won’t compact. There are a few reasons this can happen: Not enough disk space to create temporary files (must have as much free space as the message store uses) The file is actually in use. Look at which folder OE says failed. Then you use Unlocker to confirm that the .dbx file is only used by OE and not something else. If so, then you can select (click on) either Outlook Express or Local Folders before compacting. Try

What you should do if you lost your Outlook Express inbox and all emails in it. The most often way it happens is like that. You close you Outlook Express and see a pop-up http://superuser.com/questions/625964/outlook-express-gives-the-error-this-folder-is-in-use message "To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes." Everyone would like to free up the disk space, so you click "Yes" and Outlook Express starts compacting folders. If your computer hangs up and is not responding when compacting Outlook Express folders, power failure occurs or the user finishes Outlook Express process via the program manager; then http://www.emailadept.com/outlook-express-compacting.htm email database (.dbx file) is damaged. And when you start Outlook Express next time you can see the lost Outlook Express inbox and all emails disappear. So, what has happened and what does "compacting messages" mean? Outlook Express stores emails in special files with .DBX extension. Every OE folder has a corresponding .DBX file. For example, Inbox folder has a corresponding Inbox.dbx file, Outbox folder has a corresponding Outbox.dbx file and so on. Folders.dbx file stores a folder tree. When you delete a message from an Outlook Express folder or move it to another folder the message is not actually deleted from the folder, it is just marked as deleted and becomes invisible for the user. It is done to make Outlook Express work faster. The reverse side of such approach is that DBX files size grows quickly. To make the folders size smaller Outlook Express suggests that you should compact the folders. Or you can compact your folders by yourself. To do it, select the "File" -> "Folder" -> "Compact All Folders" menu item. Before compacting, select the "File" -> "Work Offline" item of the Outlook Express menu. In such a case, Outlook Express rebuilds dbx files s

Recently, I was confronted with an Inbox (Outlook Express / Windows XP) that outlook express compact would not compress or receive new messages. I found out that it had surpassed a probable size limit of 2 GB. The only solution I found to cope with the problem was to move all messages, distributing them into two temporary folders. Then the completely empty Inbox would compress normally and resume accepting messages. If necessary, messages can then be moved back from the temporary folders — respecting the size limit. I hope this little trick can help somebody out in a similar setting. Do you have any tips or tricks for working around Inbox size limitations in Microsoft Office Outlook Express? This compacting function has corrupted my Inbox three times now, and sent the entire Inbox to the fifth dimension, not retrievable in any way. I've found that I have to close every open program (including IE 6) to prev
