Unfortunately, something is blocking it from completing. There is nothing bad about this, and you can stop it by turning off the auto-compact setting: Of course it would be better to figure out why it won’t compact. There are a few reasons this can happen: Not enough disk space to create temporary files (must have as much free space as the message store uses) The file is actually in use. Look at which folder OE says failed. Then you use Unlocker to confirm that the .dbx file is only used by OE and not something else. If so, then you can select (click on) either Outlook Express or Local Folders before compacting. Try compacting manually (File⇨Folder⇨Compact (All Folders)) to reset OE’s compact schedule. If you have created a new folder, then restarting OE should fix it. If you have subscribed to a bunch of newsgroups, then folders.dbx could be broken. Try deleting (or better, renaming) the file. Is the file that the compacting process cannot finish, the Folders.dbx file? Do you store the majority of your messages in the Inbox? Do you have Service Pack 2 installed? EAFiedler, Aug 2, 2008 #2 Rob1960 Thread Starter Joined: Mar 25, 2007 Messages: 144 I have Service Pack 3. This is a new computer and Windows XP Pro was just installed on it. These are DBX files. It isn't currently compacting, but I can easily start it again. I use OE as a business filing system. I do have a nearly 2000 of this year's inbox messages stored in "Inbox." Also nearly 3K messages in "SENT" files. For previous years, I've stored my SENT files in ten other folders, labeled by year back to 1997. It is some, but not all, of these previous year folders that aren't compacking. these are not separate identities, but rather sub-files on "Local folders." Here is the path of one folder that isn't compacting: "C:\Documents and Settings\..my name..\Local Settings\Application Data\Identities\{145AD50D-E929-4D37-A1C1-50B84BEE68F3}\Microsoft\Outlook Express\1- 2002.dbx " I don't see a folder specifically named "Folders.dbx." thanks. Recently, I was confronted with an Inbox (Outlook Express / Windows XP) that would not compress or receive new messages. I found out that it had surpassed a probable size limit of 2 GB. The only solution I found to cope with the problem was to move all messages, distributing them into two temporary folders. Then the completely empty Inbox would compress normally and resume accepting messages. If necessary, messages can then be moved back from the temporary folders — respecting the size limit. I hope this little trick can help somebody out in a similar setting. Do you have any tips or tricks for working around Inbox size limitations in Microsoft Office Outlook Express?
