Unfortunately, something is blocking it from completing. There is nothing bad about this, and you can stop it by turning off the auto-compact setting: Of course it would be better to figure out why it won’t compact. There are a few reasons this can happen: Not enough disk space to create temporary files (must have as much free space as the message store uses) The file is actually in use. Look at which folder OE says failed. Then you use Unlocker to confirm that the .dbx file is only used by OE and not something else. If so, then you can select (click on) either Outlook Express or Local Folders before compacting. Try compacting manually (File⇨Folder⇨Compact (All Folders)) to reset OE’s compact schedule. If you have created a new folder, then restarting OE should fix it. If you have subscribed to a bunch of newsgroups, then folders.dbx could be broken. Try deleting (or better, renaming) the file. You will lose your newsgroups, but when OE re-creates the file, it should stop giving you compaction errors. Then you can re-subscribe to your newsgroups, but

Outlook Express 6 has this annoying habit of asking to compress the folder to "free up space" after every 100 (?) mails. When I allow the compacting, after it has been through a few folders, I get an error message that 'some program is using this folder' outlook express (the one being currently compacted) But there are no other programs or even OE is running since I know my laptop resources are fully hogged by this compacting thingy and I don't run any other application during this long drawn process. I have MSE and spybot SD resident active all the time. Could they be using this particular folder ? It's bad enough that this time consuming and outlook express compact resources hogging compressing program auto starts, but when it stops half-way citing some lame reason, you go 'aaargh'. Any tips how to resolve this issue ? Reports: · Posted 6 years ago Top amkeew Posts: 661 This post has been reported. Hi Rick. I need to keep those business emails. Can't delete them. I will have to wait till the next OE compaction prompt to see what happens when I disable MSE and spybot. Thanks.
