It gives this error on every application closing, when it compresses the base. I have rebooted, and there is enough disk space. What is causing this error? windows-xp outlook-express share|improve this question edited Jul 30 '13 at 17:56 Shekhar 4,17632342 asked Jul 30 '13 at 16:36 Alex 11 add a comment| 1 Answer 1 active oldest votes up vote 0 down vote You have the auto-compact function selected which automatically compacts the databases under certain circumstances. Unfortunately, something is blocking it from completing. There is nothing bad about this, and you can stop it by turning off the auto-compact setting: Of course it would be better to figure out why it won’t compact. There are a few reasons this can happen: Not enough disk space to create temporary files (must have as much free space as the message store uses) The file is actually in use. Look at which folder OE says failed. Then you use Unlocker to confirm that the .dbx file is only used by OE and not something else. If so, then you can select (click on) either Outlook Express or Local Folders before compacting. Try compacting manually (File⇨Folder⇨Compact (All Folders)) to reset OE’s compact schedule. If you have created a new folder, then restarting OE should fix it. If you have subscribed to a bunch of newsgroups, then folders.dbx could be broken. Try deleting (or better, renaming) the file. You will lose your newsgroups, but when OE re-creates the file, it should stop giving you compaction errors. Then you can re-subscribe to your newsgroups, but do it one at a time. share|improve this answer answered Oct 17 '13 at 20:37 Synetech 50.5k24143276 add a comment| Your Answer draft saved draft dis

I have used Outlook Express on Windows XP Professional for years with no problems. Lately, however, outlook express compacting after exiting OE, the following message box occurs: “To free up disk space, Outlook Express can compact messages. This may take up to a few minutes. OK or Cancel†If I check OK, then OE goes through all my OE message folders and compacts them. But after the end of that process, the following message box occurs: “(Red button with white X) The folder is currently in use by Outlook Express or by another application. OK or Cancel†Regardless of whether I press OK or Cancel, the process quits with no apparent further problems. This entire process now occurs every time the initial compacting message occurs. As far as I know, there is no other application or program running, and I don’t know which folder is causing the second message to appear. In any event, there doesn’t seem to be any problem or error with any other part of OE. All of my message folders continue to be present, and OE appears to function normally. However, these error messages have only started to occur in the last several months. Longer ago, they didn’t appear at all. After reading several threads here on WindowsBBS, I did a manual compaction by: 1. Clicking file>work offline 2. Clicking file>folder>compact all folders. After this process was complete, there was NO error message. I’m not su
in Outlook Express. Messages in Outlook Express are compacted in order to speed up the work of Outlook Express and to decrease the space Outlook Express files take on the disk. It is also important that the more compact your files are the less probable it is that they will be damaged in case of any failure. Compacting your files in OE is really easy. To compact all files (and therefore all folders) used by Outlook Express, you should select Compact all folders in the File - Folder menu. This picture will help you better visualize this process. Also, you can compact not all, but separate folders. For instance, you can compact only the Inbox folder. To do it, select the folder you want to compact and select the Compact menu item. This will compact only the folder that is current in Outlook Express. There are some more important issues that should be kept in mind. Do not store all your messages in one folder. For example, it will be better if you make several subfolders for the Inbox folder and sort your messages in them. What for? In this case Outlook Express will store your messages in several files making it less likely that you will lose all your correspondence at once. Try to avoid keeping too many messages in one folder (it is recommended not to exceed the number of 2.000 messages). If there are too many messages, follow the first recommendation and divide the folder into several subfolders. Regularly (approximately once a month) compact your folders. If you extensively use e-mail, you can do it more often. The best way to ensure that your messages are safe and secure is to backup your data regularly.
